The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The New York City Department of Correction has an exciting and challenging position for an individual to provide administrative support to the Executive Director of Constituent and Grievance Services. The Office of Constituent and Grievance Services (OCGS) functions as a bridge between the Department and the community at large, providing a final resolution point for legitimate concerns regarding conditions of confinement, dissemination of useful and timely information, building community relationships, enhancing public awareness, promoting justice and positive change, and fostering respect for all while supporting the Department’s goals. Under executive direction of the Executive Director of Constituent and Grievance Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

- Coordinates with various interagency departments to handle inquiries and calls from external
stakeholders.
- Acts as liaison with management, personnel and office staff for agency-wide communications
and procedures.
- Compiles, reviews, and submits unit internal reports and external requests as required.
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Departmental Information Line.
- Receive all requests for extraction of complaints requested by the Department’s Legal Unit
pertinent to Freedom of Information Law, along with requests for Letters of Incarceration.
- Serve as the office manager, monitoring supply levels, etc., office needs and manage the unit’s
request daily.
- Compiles, proofread and edit division reports, agendas, and other communications for the
Executive Director.
- Answers telephone, manage calendar, appointment scheduling, filing system, etc. for the
Executive Director.
- Assists with special projects and other responsibilities as required by the Executive Director.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

- Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in a relevant field, preferably local government. - Strong computer skills including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel - Excellent verbal and written communication skills - Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing needs and priorities.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
