The Division of Sidewalk & Inspection Management (SIM) is responsible for maintaining the city's 12,760 miles of sidewalks and approximately 162,000 pedestrian ramps.
The Office of Emergency Response Unit (OER) is a 24/7 operation that is dedicated to the resolution of any incident or crisis that threatens the structural integrity or impedes public safety or the free flow of people and goods utilizing the transportation infrastructure systems within the city of New York. OER consists of four sub-Units: The Communications Center, Emergency Response, Radio Repair and Maintenance, and Emergency Planning and Preparedness. Under direct supervision, monitor radio frequencies, answer radio calls in the prescribed manner, transmit information to field personnel as dictated in the special operating procedures, make telephone calls, and accurately log transmissions as necessary. Coordinate inter-agency and intra-agency responses to incidents and emergencies. Perform accurate data entry and retrieval on various systems. Create comprehensive and accurate incident descriptions and collect accurate location information. Make visual inspection of all operating equipment and settings and report malfunctioning equipment. May be required to perform preventative maintenance work on operating equipment or arrange to have maintenance done by designated personnel. Participate in training sessions as necessary and may be required to work unscheduled or extended tours based on operational needs. Serves as lead Operations Communications Specialist in the absence of an Associate Operations Communications Specialist. Weekly review of all radio transmissions on assigned shifts. Monitor emergency communication devices within the Communications Center. Monitor Citizen App notifications and advise Supervisory and Executive staff as needed. Support Supervisory staff with training of new Operations Communications Specialist LV1 Operators. Assist with retrieving information from various databases in response to inquiries from the FOIL Unit.
Additional Information:
The Office of Emergency Response (OER) is a 24 x 7 Unit. The current tours are 6 am - 2 PM, 2 PM - 10 PM, and 10 PM - 6 am.
The five-day work week will include working weekends with two consecutive weekdays off.
Preferred Skills:
- Understanding of Incident Command System and proficient with Microsoft office applications and web-based technologies such a Microsoft word
- Knowledge of roadways within 5 boroughs
- Knowledge and usage of emergency notification systems
- Knowledge of Traffic Signal Maintenance Program -TSMP
- Knowledge of Streetlight Maintenance Program-SLMP

1. Six months of full-time satisfactory experience operating two-way radio equipment involving the extensive receiving, logging and sending or radio transmissions in English (Citizen Band radio experience is not acceptable); or
2. Six months of full-time satisfactory experience as a telephone dispatcher involving the extensive receiving, logging and sending of messages in English (telephone operator experience is not acceptable).
Special Note
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have at least two years of experience in Assignment Level I.
