SHINE is a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) that promotes nutrition education and obesity prevention among low-income older adults. SNAP-Ed interventions are provided at NYC AGING funded Older Adult Centers (OAC) and at Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC) throughout the five boroughs of NYC. Deliverables include nutrition education workshops, quarterly nutrition newsletters, container gardening project, food box distribution projects, health fairs etc.
NYC Aging seeks a SHINE Grant Nutrition Educator to manage the implementation of the Seniors’ Health Improvement Nutrition Education (SHINE) grant that NYC Aging receives from the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA). SHINE is a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) that promotes nutrition education and obesity prevention among low-income older adults. SNAP-Ed interventions will be provided at NYC Aging funded Older Adult Centers (OAC) and at Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC) throughout the five boroughs of NYC.
Reporting to the SHINE Grant Coordinator, the SHINE Nutrition Educator duties includes but are not limited to:
- Implement and deliver nutrition education workshops at Older Adult Centers (OACs) and Naturally Occuring Retirement Communities (NORCs) throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
- Plan and implement live cooking demonstrations on site and virtually.
- Distribute hard or electronic copies of nutrition education materials and reinforcement items.
- Conduct evaluations by distributing pre and post-tests at each workshop and compiling results.
- Compile data, maintain records, and submit reports as required by NYC AGING and the grant.
- Create and develop quarterly nutrition newsletters.
- Coordinate vendor fairs to increase awareness of community resources to support healthy eating.
- Assist in implementing a food box distribution program and a Container Gardening Project.
- Participate in related NYSOFA meetings, training and webinars.
- Other tasks as required by supervisor.
This position requires extensive travel throughout the five boroughs as well as out of town grant-related conferences and trainings.
Qualification Requirements
1. A master's degree from an accredited college in nutrition or in public health; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 18 semester credits in nutrition or public health on the graduate or undergraduate level, and two (2) years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in nutrition education.
Special Qualification Requirements
Assignment Level II
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements described above, one (1) year as a Nutritionist AL I with the City of New York or at least three (3) years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in nutrition education.
Assignment Level III
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements described in Assignment Level I, two (2) years as a Nutritionist AL I and AL II with the City of New York or five (5) years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in nutrition education, at least two (2) years of which must have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
- Registered Dietitian Certification preferred. - Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite & graphic design software such as Canva. - Excellent organizational skills excellent communication skills both written and oral. - Ability to work independently. - Ability to multi-task and meet deadline within tight deadlines. - Experience working with the older adult population and with low-income individuals. - Ability to host virtual group meetings using applications such as Zoom, WebEx and Facebook Live etc. - Bi-lingual (Spanish or Chinese speaking) highly preferred.
