The Northeast Queens Parks Administrator is responsible for managing over 800 acres of parkland including the 657 acre Alley Pond Park, Udall’s Cove Park Preserve, Crocheron Park, Little Bay Park and Fort Totten, a 50 acre park on the Long Island Sound. Fort Totten is a Civil War era army base containing a number of open areas and historic structures.
Major Responsibilities
- Oversee the management, policy implementation, maintenance, operations, special events and security for all parks.
- Develop capital priorities, secure funding, and oversee all capital and requirements projects in the parks.
- Raise private support for operations and programs.
- Build and expand partnerships with volunteers, corporations, and community groups.
- Represent Parks with elected officials, other government agencies sports leagues and cultural institutions that operate within the parks.
- Plan, review, approve and manage all special events and programs in the parks.
- Maintain high standards for customer service, public access, and park maintenance.
- Obtain funding from elected officials and approvals for City and private funded projects.
- Cultivate and strengthen community support for the long-term park restorations. Encourage residents to volunteer their time and professional expertise and raise funds. Work with established Friends groups in each park and establish new groups.

MOVEMENT IN THE FACE OF CIVIL SERVICE LISTS IS PROHIBITED UNDER CIVIL SERVICE LAW.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college plus four years of satisfactory, full-time experience in recreation leadership, gardening, grounds maintenance, building maintenance or construction, of which 18 months must have been in an administrative, consultative, managerial or executive capacity; or
2. High school graduation or its educational equivalent plus six years of experience as described in "1" above; or
3.Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must possess the 18 months of administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive experience as described in "1" above.
Preference will be given to 1) current permanent city employees serving in the Administrative Park & Recreation Manager civil service title or 2) on leave from the title or 3) permanent city employees in or on leave from a comparable title (e.g. Administrative Staff Analyst or Administrative Manager) or 4) employees who took and passed the recent APRM exam (Exam No. 4505 or Exam 4005) or 5) employees who are reachable on a comparable civil service list. Experience in community relations, horticulture, landscape architecture and/or planning. 2. Excellent management, administrative and communication skills. 3. Ability to work effectively with public agencies, volunteers and private groups in initiate projects and achieve measurable results. 4. A valid New York State driver license.
