The Team You’ll Work With:
The Office of New Media and Cultural Communications is helping to transform the traditional press arm of the Mayor’s office into one that includes and engages new media, ensuring that Mayor Mamdani’s agenda and achievements reach and mobilize New Yorkers who have historically been left out of the governing process. The Office oversees constituency media relations and ensures a consistent narrative reaches all New York audiences and engages new media and influencers to pitch and deliver stories to the places where New Yorkers get their news.
The Problems You’ll Solve:
The New Media Press Assistant will support the execution of the administration’s new media strategy helping coordinate outreach, manage logistics, track coverage, and ensure seamless execution of new media opportunities.
This role will play a key part in supporting team operations across a high-volume creator and media ecosystem helping manage intake, maintain systems, and ensure strong coordination across the Director of New Media and Cultural Communications and Deputy Press Secretaries.
This is a high-exposure, fast-paced role for someone looking to build a career in communications, media, and politics.
Key Responsibilities:
New Media and Creator Research, Intake, and Coordination
- Conduct ongoing research to identify creators, new media outlets, neighborhood pages, and other online partners across key geographies, communities, and verticals (e.g., neighborhood-based accounts, parenting, food, culture, finance, etc.).
- Support intake of inbound interest, including reviewing submissions, assessing audience alignment, and flagging high-potential partners.
- Build and maintain detailed creator and outlet databases, including contact information, audience metrics, geographic reach, content niche, audience demographics, past coverage, and relationship status.
- Track and categorize creators by engagement type (e.g., scheduled interviews, pitched content, network amplification, organic coverage).
- Support outreach to creators and new media outlets, including drafting emails, managing follow-ups, and maintaining communication pipelines.
- Coordinate logistics for creator interviews, events, and press moments, including confirmations, briefing distribution, and day-of coordination.
- Maintain intake and tracking systems (forms, spreadsheets, CRM tools) to ensure visibility into pipeline, participation, and coverage outcomes.
Team Operations & Workflow Support
- Support coordination of internal and external meetings, including creator intake conversations, partnership discussions, and media prep.
- Manage inbound requests and help route opportunities across the team, ensuring timely follow-up and clear ownership.
- Maintain visibility into team priorities and holds across a high volume of creator and media engagements.
- Prepare briefing materials and background notes in advance of key meetings and activations.
- Track action items, follow-ups, and deliverables to support consistent execution across the team.
- Assist in managing workflows across outreach, bookings, and activations helping ensure continuity from intake through execution.
- Help build and maintain internal systems (trackers, intake forms, pipelines) that improve team efficiency and coordination.
Event & Activation Support
- Assist in the execution of creator press conferences, cultural activations, and media events.
- Manage check-in, credentialing, and on-site coordination for creator attendees.
- Help prep materials for events (run of show, briefing docs, Q&A).
Content & Briefing Support
- Draft briefing materials, backgrounders, and outreach emails.
- Compile research on creators, outlets, niches, and audience profiles.
- Support development of talking points tailored to new media audiences.
Coverage Tracking & Reporting
- Track creator coverage across platforms (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc.).
- Log links, metrics, and sentiment into internal trackers.
- Assist in compiling recaps and performance reports.
Rapid Response Support
- Monitor social media and creator ecosystems for emerging trends and opportunities.
- Flag relevant content, creators, and narrative shifts in real time.
- Assist in quick-turn outreach and coordination during breaking moments.
About You:
- You are highly organized and detail-oriented.
- You have strong communication and writing skills.
- You can manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- 0-2 years of experience (internships, fellowships, or entry-level roles welcome).

Minimum Qualifications
1. Do you have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university?
2. Do you have an associate degree from an accredited college or university along with two (2) years of experience with administrative, analytic, coordinative, supervisory or liaison responsibilities?
3. Do you have a four-year high school diploma, or its educational equivalent approved by a state's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization along with four (4) years of experience as described in question "2" above?
4. Do you have a satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that described in questions "1," "2," and/or "3" above?

- You have strong familiarity with social media platforms and internet culture. - You have a strong interest in and familiarity with the government and political landscape.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
