The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department's core values.
The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a full-time Network Engineer in the Bureau of Technology Systems and Development. Reporting directly to the Director of Network Services, the successful candidate will be working with FDNY personnel, vendors, and clients to continually evolve the FDNY enterprise network to meet ever-changing service requirements and to ensure its integrity; works as part of a team to plan, implement, audit, maintain and troubleshoot the FDNY’s data communications infrastructure (wired, wireless and virtual) and related data service offerings. This Network Engineer must be able to work comfortably in a large-scale network environment managing several hundred locations.
The Network Engineer should have thorough knowledge of the following technologies:
- Routing and Switching using Cisco and/or Arista
- Cisco 9k, 7k IOS NX-OS
- Software Defined Wan (SDWAN) using Velo Cloud
- Cisco ACI, Spine and Leaf, VRF
- Cisco DNAC
- Cisco wireless technology including Meraki AP
- Palo Alto and Fortinet Firewalls, configuration, installation, maintenance
- VXLAN, MPLS, VPN
- Cisco ISE
- Routing protocols including BGP, OSPF, IS-IS
- F5 and AVI load balancer, how to configure VIP, IRULE, LTM troubleshooting
- IP address schemes including subnetting, ipv4/ipv6
- Azure express route and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)
- Various industry standard proxy servers such as MacAfee and Bluecoat
- Knowledge of the following tools: Netscout, Extra Hop, RSA.
NOTE: This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per weeks, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program
agreed between the City and DC37.
Special Working Conditions: May be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Professional/vendor certification(s) in local area network administration that is required for the position to be filled. In addition, all candidates must have the following:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and two years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) experience in local area network and/or wide area network planning, design, configuration, installation, implementation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management; or
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) information technology experience of which at least 2 years must have been as described in "1" or
3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Education may be substituted for experience on the basis that 30 undergraduate semester credits from an accredited college is equivalent to 6 months of experience. A master’s degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college may be substitute for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory (not classroom based) full-time information technology experience as described in "1" above.
Note: In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements: Incumbents may be required to update existing and/or obtain additional professional industry-standard certification(s) for current and future technical environments(s) in which they may be assigned to work, as determined by the employing agency.
-Minimum five year’s experience working with large scale network environment. -Certifications: Cisco and other network certifications required. -The candidate must be hands on and have excellent documentation skills.
