The Department of Homeless Services is comprised of 2,000 employees and with an annual operating budget of over $1 billion. DHS is one of the largest organizations of its kind committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City. Collaborating with other public agencies and not-for-profit partners, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it occurs, reduce street homelessness and assist New Yorkers to transition from shelter into appropriate permanent housing.
With a fleet of 184 vehicles, Fleet Administration ensures the prompt and safe transport of both Family and Adult Services clientele on two different shifts and locations. They are also equipped to transport disabled clients (wheelchair bound). When needed, warming and cooling buses and vans for our street homeless population are offered.

The Fleet Administration is recruiting for three (3) Motor Vehicle Operators who will:

- Assist in loading and unloading of materials, equipment, and passengers.

- Report any accidents in which the vehicle may have been involved.

- Watch for traffic hazards while labor force is engaged in making emergency repairs.

- Responsible for tools, supplies, materials, and equipment carried in or on the assigned vehicle.

- Prepare and submit daily trip reports.

- When not driving, may be required to perform such additional duties as running errands, answering phones, and delivering mail and/or small packages.

- Must have a Commercial Driver License (CDL) B with passenger endorsement, valid in the State of New York The license; must be maintained for the duration of employment.

- Daily assignment of Family Services HERO client transfers.

- Transports handicapped and/or wheelchair bound clients.

- Transports clients and their belongings from various facilities to their permanent housing apartments throughout and outside of the five boroughs as well as the tri-state area (NJ, CT and PA).

- Assists in delivering and picking-up vehicles from vendors.

- Delivers supplies and materials via truck to facilities.

- Transports Beaver Street Staff and visitors via bus for special assignments, events, and shelter tours during and after working hours.

- Assists Family Services/PATH after hours and on weekends transporting clients to placements.

- Provides routine maintenance on vehicles by refueling/changing oil/checking tires/horns/lights/brakes/wipers and others to ensure the safety operation of the vehicles.

Work Location: 33 Beaver St, New York NY
Hours/Schedule: Monday – Friday 8pm – 4:30am
Salary Range: $39,963 - $45,957


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements: There are no formal education or experience requirements.
Driver License Requirement: By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. If you have moving violations, license suspension(s) or an accident record, you may be disqualified. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
