The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the nation’s largest public housing authority, with an operating budget of $3.3 billion and approximately 10,600 employees who manage and maintain 326 developments that house over 400,000 residents. NYCHA also operates the country’s largest Section 8 program, which provides rental assistance to over 200,000 additional families.

The Asbestos Department provides essential and specialized services that support the maintenance and operation of NYCHA's developments. The Department provides technical assistance for routine and emergencies to NYCHA personnel in the fields of asbestos and is responsible for investigating testing, and abatement of Asbestos-related materials.

Under the direction of the Asbestos Supervisor(s)/Asbestos Handlers/Asbestos Investigators and with wide latitude for independent initiative, judgment and decision-making, the selected candidate's duties will include, but not be limited to the following:

1. Remove building hardware such as sink, shower panel, kitchen base cabinet, shelving, other furniture, and equipment.
2. Survey the apartment including make work area sketches with measurements to allow for asbestos abatement/inspections to be conducted.
3. Assist in minor electrical instrument hook-ups.
4. Prepare reports and keep records.
5. Operate a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites.

NOTE: A driver’s license is required for this position.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyperson or helper in the electrical trades, the mechanical trades, or the construction or maintenance of buildings; or

2. At least two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient full-time training or education in the electrical, mechanical or construction trades in a trade school, technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of experience will be credited for each year of full-time acceptable training or education.


Preferred Skills

1. Experience with public housing. 2. Experience using wireless handheld computer devices to record data. 3. Basic computer skills experience using Microsoft Outlook and Excel. 4. Any Asbestos related certifications and willing to go further on asbestos certifications such as DOL Inspector/DEP Investigator as required.
