Job Description

CANDIDATE MUST BE PERMANENT IN THE MAINTENANCE WORKER TITLE OR REACHABLE ON CURRENT CIVIL SERVICE LIST FOR THE MAINTENANCE WORKER TITLE.

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness. In partnership with other City Agencies and Non-for-Profit organizations, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it begins, reduce street homelessness, provide temporary shelter, and connect individuals and families to stable housing all with a focus on accountability, empathy, and equity.

DHS is committed to continuous improvement and employs innovative strategies to deliver high-quality services that support a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. The agency manages hundreds of facilities and operates with a large team as well as a several billion-dollar budget to meet the diverse needs of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.

The Facilities & Logistics Division (F&L) is responsible for providing both direct and indirect maintenance and repair services to City owned and operated facilities using in-house skilled trade-workers, maintenance contracts and purchasing operation. F&L contract portfolio oversees approximately $200+ million dollars assigned to building maintenance. The goal of this unit is to ensure funds are being spent on preventive and general maintenance to avoid premature failure of building systems.

The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for one (1) Maintenance Worker who will:

- Assist in the routine maintenance, operation and repair of public buildings and structures, and the equipment they contain.

- Conduct visual inspections of building equipment and conditions; performs related work, such as driving to and from work sites.

- Maintain, adjust and make minor repairs of building hardware, furniture, shelving and equipment.

- Replace broken window and door glass.

- Repair windows and sash.

- Make minor repairs to masonry, woodwork, flooring and walls.

- Make minor repairs to building electrical, plumbing and heating systems.

- Assist in relocating building equipment as directed.

Hours/Schedule: Monday – Friday/ 8am – 4:00pm

Minimum Qualifications

1. Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyperson or helper in the electrical trades, the mechanical trades, or the construction or maintenance of buildings; or

2. At least two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient full-time training or education in the electrical, mechanical or construction trades in a trade school, technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of experience will be credited for each year of full-time acceptable training or education.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
