Job Description
The Department of Social Services (DSS) is comprised of the administrative units of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). The agency is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential benefits. The DSS McMillan Library, Archives, and Digital Records is located at DSS headquarters at 4 World Trade Center, serves and supports agency staff at all levels in all five boroughs. Holdings include a growing print collection, eBooks, subject files, and print and digital archive.
Under the direction of the Library Director, with very great latitude for the exercise of independent judgment or action, the Librarian will perform highly sophisticated and responsible work in archival, library, and records management.
The DSS McMillan Library, Archives, and Digital Records is recruiting for one (1) Associate Public Records Officer II to function as a Librarian who will report to the DSS Library Director, with duties that include, but are not limited to:
- Provide support to overall functionality of the library, archive, and records collections, with emphasis on day-to-day operations.
- Analyze operating routines, methods and procedures concerning archival and/or
library functions and/or records management.
- Supervise the arrangement of archival and other library materials within prescribed
functional or organizational categories.
- Recommend and/or implement improvements; prepare and supervise preparation of reports, collect statistics and maintain related print and digital records.
- Select books, journals and other printed material needed to maintain an adequate collection of standard current and historical research literature related to the research needs of the administration.
- Catalog current and archival materials and maintain subject file finding guides.
- Create presentations in library archive literacy, research support, and specialized services to agency employees.
- Prepare and review reports.
- Distribute, collect, and ensure proper documentation of circulating materials to and from patrons.
- Assume the responsibilities of the Library Director when the director is unavailable.

1. A master's degree from an accredited college in Library Science, Archival Science, American History, Political Science or a related area, plus two years of full-time experience in archival or library science, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity of incumbents performing at a professional level; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. However, all candidates must have a master's degree from an accredited college and the one year of supervisory experience as described in "1" above.
- Experience in archives and/or specialized collections management. - Above average web and literature search skills. - Excellent customer service skills. - Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Significant experience with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). - Ability to work independently.
