The New York City Comptroller, an independently elected official, is the Chief Financial Officer of the City of New York. The mission of the office is to promote the financial integrity and operational effectiveness of New York City government, in order to secure a thriving future for all New Yorkers and build a more just, equitable, and resilient city. We utilize the tools and responsibilities that the City Charter assigns us to ensure that City government is budgeting wisely, investing strategically, living up to its promises and obligations, and keeping a sharp eye on the long-term challenges to come.

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) advises the Comptroller on a variety of legal matters, including issues relating to litigation, investments, pension funds, audits, settlements of claims brought against the City, employee discipline and proposed legislation.

The Legal Intern will assist attorneys on a broad range of issues relevant to the agency's work. Projects will include:
- Legal writing
- Research
- Data collection
- Contract review

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must be current matriculated students at an accredited United States law school.

IMPORTANT:
- Our office is located at the David Dinkins Municipal Building, 1 Centre St. in Manhattan/New York.
- All interns will work in-person in the office, Monday – Thursday, 28 hours per week.
- The employment period will be from June 3 – August 1, 2024.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.


Preferred Skills

- Able to perform legal research and complete writing assignments using Lexis and/or Westlaw - Excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills confident working and communicating with attorneys and other staff working at the Comptroller's Office - Attention to detail, good judgment, and the ability to handle issues in the most confidential manner - Excellent time management as well as, organizational, and computer skills

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
