THE SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL BE OFFERED A SALARY BETWEEN $59,116- $67,983.
The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of New York City’s children and families by providing child welfare, juvenile justice, and early care services. In child welfare, ACS contracts with private nonprofit organizations to support and stabilize families at risk of a crisis through preventive services and provides foster care services for children not able to safely remain at home. Each year, the agency’s Division of Child Protection responds to more than 50,000 reports of suspected child abuse or neglect. In juvenile justice, ACS manages and funds services including detention and placement, intensive community-based alternatives for youth, and support services for families. ACS is also a key part of NYCs early childhood and education continuum, providing child care assistance to thousands of child welfare involved and low-income children so they can access safe, affordable, quality care
FCLS is primarily responsible for representing The Administration for Children’s Services in child neglect and abuse cases, permanency hearings, juvenile delinquency hearings and other child welfare proceedings in the five Family Courts.
Under the supervision of the Legal Case Assistant Manager, with some latitude for independent action and decision-making, the Legal Case Assistant performs the following responsibilities: mission on behalf of children and families. Specific duties will include:
- Work with provider agencies and other service providers to address case related issues and independently determine when information is needed from a service provider for case preparation.
- Prepare compliance reports based on data in electronic legal tracking system on court preparedness of provider agencies and other ACS divisions; make recommendations on procedures to improve court preparedness.
- Draft correspondence to provider agencies and other service providers; conduct legal research and draft memorandum for judges and other family court stakeholders on behalf of FCLS; and draft other legal documents such as subpoenas and motions.
- Work with community service providers to coordinate receipt of court documents and reports and respond to discovery requests of family court stakeholders.
- May attend case conferences and share information between community service providers, family court participants and other ACS divisions to facilitate case resolution.
- Assist with coordinating court appearances of service provider staff.
- Monitor timeliness of receipt of Permanency Hearing reports and Extension of Placement petitions and file said documents with the Family Court.
- Assist with the preparation of legal documents such as Permanency Hearing reports and Extension of Placement petitions.
- Support the Intake Process of Article Ten cases - Monitoring and facilitating all aspects of the Family First Legislation.
- Support the process of providing discovery on Article Ten cases including but not limited to the redaction of case records, physically going to get subpoenaed records and the redaction of subpoenaed records.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
The ideal candidate will have at least two years of work experience, preferably in a law office or community centered organization. Candidate should also have knowledge of computer systems, as appropriate, e.g. Microsoft Word.
