The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Pathology Support Services, the selected candidates will serve as borough leads for the Forensic Pathology Support Unit. As a Lead FPC, the Lead will have supervisory tasks and responsibilities in addition to performing the duties of a Forensic Pathology Coordinator. Typical tasks include but are not limited to the following:

- Directly supervise the Forensic Pathology Coordinators assigned to the borough forensic pathology centers
- Provide direct administrative support services to the Assistant Director of Pathology Support Service, borough Deputy Chief Medical Examiner and borough Medical Examiners, including the Fellowship Program
- Support the unit and other programs on special projects/requests, as assigned by the Assistant Director and/or Deputy Chief Medical Examiner, from development through successful execution
- Assist with unit recruitment, onboarding, training and retraining of FPC staff
- Help coordinate the intake process and facilitate the monthly rotations of medical students and residents
- Oversee and delegate daily tasks and responsibilities within the FPC team to ensure seamless operations
- Assist staff in managing workload, ensure task completion and promptly addresses errors and operational issues
- Serve as Testing Results liaison for DOH Public Health Laboratories, private laboratories, and OCME
- Coordinate neuro and cardiac pathology exams, handle any associated paperwork, labeling, and tasks and address any issues
- Provide borough support to the Fellowship Coordinator, assisting with and assigning tasks related to fellows, residents and medical students
- Assist in the development of standard operating policies and procedures (SOP) and maintaining SOPs in document control system
- Schedule and facilitate internal and external meetings and trainings
- Draft, distribute and respond to internal and external communications
- Assist with unit ordering of supplies and inventory management
- Prepare memos, background documents, presentation materials, reports, and other documents
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to collect, organize, and analyze data
- Assist with the handling of personnel matters, performance management, scheduling, time/leave management
- Assist and support the Medical Examiner Support Unit staff as needed based on caseload and agency operational needs
- Work closely with other units to ensure adequate support is provided to meet the needs of the Medical Examiners
- All other duties and responsibilities of a Forensic Pathology Coordinator
- Performs other duties as required


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field.

2. For Assignment to Assignment Level I - B
In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements For All Assignment Levels" above, to be assigned to Assignment Level I-B individuals must have at least one year of satisfactory full-time experience in criminalistics, forensic science or analytic chemistry, or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.

3. In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" above, to be assigned to Assignment Level II, individuals must have one of the following:
1. One year of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B; or 2. One additional year of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of two years of such experience; or 3. A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling two years of experience as described above.

4. In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" for Assignment Level I-B above, to be assigned to Assignment Level III, individuals must have one of the following:
1. Two years of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B and/or II; or 2. Two additional years of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of three years of such experience; or 3. A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling three years of experience as described above.

5. For Assignment to Assignment Level IV
In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" for Assignment Level I-B above, to be assigned to Assignment Level IV, individuals must have one of the following:
1. Three years of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B, II, and /or III; or 2. Three additional years of experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of four years of such experience; or
3. A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling four years of experience, as described above.


Preferred Skills

Successful candidates should possess the following: at least one year of supervisory experience, experience managing a diverse staff, conflict resolution skills, demonstrated skills in Microsoft Word and Excel must be highly organized and possess excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
