JOB DESCRIPTION:

The NYPD Intelligence Bureau is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and acting on intelligence with the mission of protecting New York City from terrorism, crime, and organized violence in accordance with the constitution and the law.

The Intelligence Bureau is seeking a qualified Intelligence Research Specialist (IRS) (rank level commensurate with relevant experience) to assist with the Department’s analytic operations as it meets the challenge of today’s dynamic terrorism threat environment.
By joining this team in this civilian capacity, you will complement the NYPD's current counterterrorism efforts, providing the additional vision, expertise, perspectives, and resources needed to combat threats beyond those posed by traditional crime. You will be able to work at a detailed level on complex investigative and strategic matters, using your unique skills to help detect, deter, disrupt, and defend against terrorist activity. Ultimately, you will make a real difference in protecting New York City. Conducting terrorism-related investigations and analyzing global threats is a solemn responsibility that requires a broad range of general and specialized skills. The NYPD Intelligence Bureau’s Intelligence Research Specialists include subject matter experts in a broad array of fields with diverse economic backgrounds including international relations, global affairs, cybersecurity, political science, security studies, law, and public policy. Some are technical experts, and others possess unique regional knowledge focused on particular countries, religions, and languages, offering nuanced understandings of the intersection of ideology, history, and culture. As an Intelligence Research Specialist with the NYPD, you will be a civilian member of an elite agency recognized worldwide for its leadership in innovative counterterrorism and law enforcement efforts.

Qualification Requirements (Assignment Level I Only)
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in forensic financial analysis, business, economics, finance, history, international studies, logistics, management, political science, psychology, public administration, sociology, statistics or a closely related field, and one year of satisfactory full-time professional experience working in criminal intelligence investigations, international research, intelligence database monitoring and analysis, computer aided mapping or geographic information systems technology or a closely related field; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college in one of the appropriate areas or closely related field as described in "1" above and one year of satisfactory full-time professional experience as described in "1" above.

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in forensic financial analysis, business, economics, finance, history, international studies, logistics, management, political science, psychology, public administration, sociology, statistics or a closely related field, and four years of satisfactory full-time professional experience working in criminal intelligence investigations, international research, intelligence database monitoring and analysis, computer aided mapping or geographic information systems technology or a closely related field; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college in one of the appropriate areas or closely related field as described in "1" above and two years of satisfactory fulltime professional experience as described in "1" above.
Written proficiency and/or fluency in languages such as Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto, German, Hebrew, Italian, Russian, or Chinese. Background using analytic systems, research tools, social media platforms, and databases. Comfort preparing written reports and verbal presentations on short notice in demanding environments. A prior/active federal government security clearance is not required for this position, however, opportunities are available for analysts to receive one and ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is preferred.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
