Traffic Operations is seeking to hire an Industrial Hygienist L2 under direction, to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations governing health and safety in the workplace. Under supervision, this position will conduct safety and health investigations to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and City environmental and occupational health and safety regulations and other relevant laws and regulations.

The successful candidate will perform air monitoring and other environmental and health tests utilizing a variety of technical equipment which may require the use of protective clothing, respirator, and mask. This position will evaluate findings, prepare reports, and make recommendations, participate in labor/management safety meetings and public and employee information activities, monitor the performance of contractor and in-house staff, and issue violations.

Under direction, the successful candidate will also perform highly difficult and complex safety and health investigations as well as act as a technical resource person, performing research, establishing standards, and making recommendations on health and safety matters. The candidate will manage site visits to field locations and job sites, review safety protocols and site plans for potential safety issues and address any safety issues on the job site. Provide trainings, toolbox talks, setup safety plans for upcoming jobs, order safety gear for staff and inspect all safety equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in industrial hygiene, environmental health science, occupational health science and/or safety engineering; or

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in the physical or natural sciences, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering and/or toxicology and one year of satisfactory, full-time experience
in the identification, evaluation and control of health and safety hazards; or

3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of satisfactory full-time work experience as described in “2” above; or

4. A combination of education and experience that is the equivalent of the course work and/or experience
described in “1”, “2”, and “3” above. Semester credits from an accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, environmental health science, occupational health science and/or safety engineering may be substituted for experience on the basis of 7 semester credits equals 6 months of experience, up to a maximum of 28 semester credits. Semester credits from an accredited college or university in the physical or natural sciences, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering and/or toxicology may be substituted for experience on the basis of 7 semester credits equals 3 months of experience, up to a maximum of 28 semester credits. However, all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

License Requirements
A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Special Note:

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, one year of satisfactory full-time work experience in the identification, evaluation and control of health and safety hazards.


Preferred Skills

Strong desktop computer application knowledge and skills (Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.). Superior verbal and written communication and negotiation skills. Working knowledge of Passport, Punch-Out, and P-Card purchasing guidelines.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
