The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), a recognized leader and innovator in public health and mental hygiene services seeks a dynamic and experienced Electrician to serve on our Preventative Maintenance Team within the Bureau of Facilities Planning & Administrative Service’s Office of Facilities Planning and Space Management.
Duties will include but not limited:
- Perform preventative/corrective electrical maintenance to a wide variety of HVAC and Refrigeration equipment and their components in accordance with manufacturer’s standards and/or ASHRAE 180 Standard as scheduled in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Inspect, clean, maintain, troubleshoot among other PM tasks of major HVAC equipment panels, disconnect switches, lighting panels, boiler panels, major equipment electrical connections etc.
- Repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems and equipment including but not limited to fixtures, motors, load centers, relays, controls, circuitry, and appliances to include high and low voltage circuits.
- Conduct tests on existing installations to determine faults and making necessary repairs.
- Repair and replace faulty switches, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems to include fabrication of electrical control panels.
- Dismantle electrical machinery and replaces defective electrical or mechanical parts.
- Detect faulty operations, defective material and report those and any unusual situations accordingly.
- Troubleshoot the following motor control equipment properly and safely: motor starters, run relays; Variable Frequency Drives(VFDs); Servo motors and controls.
- Repair electrical motors related to HVAC systems up to and including 480 volt – 3 phase. Test motors for amperage, voltage, insulation condition, and rpms.
- Install, repair, replaces and maintains electric wiring systems and components, equipment and apparatus in or on buildings or structures in accordance with the New York City Electrical Code, pertinent plans, specifications and job orders.
- Read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
- Use computerized maintenance management system to report and document daily activities, maintenance, and repairs performed on system equipment.

1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician; or
2. At least three years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician and sufficient full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician's helper or apprentice electrician or education in the electrical or electronic field acquired in an approved trade, technical school or vocational high school or college or university to make up the equivalent of the remaining experience. Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 credits, from an accredited college or university, for one year of experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of such helper or apprentice experience, or education in an approved trade or technical school or vocational high school in the electrical or electronic field. Less than a full year of helper or apprentice experience, or relevant education, will receive prorated credit.
3. License Requirements
For appointment to certain positions, candidates will be required to possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
For assignment as a special electrician, candidates must possess and maintain the license(s) and/or certificate(s) required to perform these duties.
- Experience in performing electrical preventive maintenance and repairs to HVAC/R systems and their components. - Ability to plan and organize work. - Ability and willingness to learn and practice new skills at an accelerated pace. - Knowledge of NYC Electrical and Mechanical codes.
