Job Description

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the nation’s largest public housing authority, with an operating budget of $3.3 billion and approximately 10,600 employees who manage and maintain 325 developments that house over 400,000 residents. NYCHA also operates the country’s largest Section 8 program, which provides rental assistance to over 200,000 additional families.

The selected candidate will perform duties under the supervision of the Administrator of Pest Management and/or designee, with some latitude for independent judgement and action.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to the following:

1. Replace and repair broken windows and window wells.
2. Make minor repairs to masonry, woodwork, flooring and walls including caulking cracks and crevices of cabinetry.
3. Make minor repairs to building electrical, plumbing and heating systems, including putting escutcheon plates around heat risers.
4. Assist in relocating building equipment as directed.
5. Install Masonite over larger holes and create follow up work orders as needed.
6. Visual inspect public buildings, structure and equipment to assess and check for defects, malfunction and hazardous conditions especially pertaining to pests and make corrections.
7. Work with teams to put wire lath in the ground to keep rats from burrowing up.
8. Visual checks for and records the observable condition of the premises.
9. Prepare reports and keep records on paper and on work orders.
10. Operate a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites if instructed.
11. Install rat proof door sweeps as directed.
12. Install shelving, storage and flash locks in Pesticide storage rooms.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyperson or helper in the electrical trades, the mechanical trades, or the construction or maintenance of buildings; or

2. At least two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient full-time training or education in the electrical, mechanical or construction trades in a trade school, technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of experience will be credited for each year of full-time acceptable training or education.
