JOB DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The NYPD Mounted Unit is largest and oldest police mounted unit in the United States. It provides horseback patrol support for the Department via high visibility, community interaction. and ceremonial presentation during both routine patrol operations and special events. The Unit is one part the precinct and borough-level crime reduction and quality of life improvement plans. The Unit is world-renowned and an iconic part of the City's tourist industry.

Hostlers are responsible for the daily general care and well-being of the Mounted Unit's horses assigned to their facility. Duties include feeding, watering, communicating with supervisors and/or the Departments veterinarian regarding the dressing and caring for minor wounds and/or alerts and/or administering medication at the direction of the veterinarian and documenting said actions, keeping the stalls/waterers/feeding mangers clean at all times, keep the barn floor tidy and free from dirt/grime/cobwebs, groom and prepare horses for patrol, tack supervisors' horses for patrol, be able to identify maladies and indications of illness/lameness and be able to communicate these situations to a supervisor or the vet.

Candidates should be eager to learn and work with others in a team environment, and also be willing to work alone if necessary. Candidates should be willing to work on any tour, performing overtime if required, and to work on holidays and at least one day of the weekend.


Minimum Qualifications

1. Six months of full-time, paid experience in the grooming, feeding, cleaning, and inspection of at least 3 horses each day.


Preferred Skills

Candidates should have prior experience with horse care and should feel completely comfortable and confident around horses. Candidates should be able to hand walk, groom, and load horses without apprehension, and be familiar with the tools and lack associated with such actions. Candidates should be skilled in the operation of hand tools (brooms, shovels, pitchforks, rakes) and basic mechanical/power tools (leaf blowers, vacuums, washer/dryers) to keep the barn floor and equipment clean. Candidates should be able to identify maladies in horse health (colic, lameness, lying up, or other injuries) and have a general knowledge of care in order to effectively work with an attending supervisor or Department veterinarian.
