New York City Department of Transportation seeks a qualified Transportation Specialist to work in the Green Infrastructure Unit within Capital Planning & Initiation in the division of Budget and Capital Program Management. The primary roles of the Green Infrastructure Unit include working with Department of Environmental Protection on their Green Infrastructure program in the right-of-way. This involves developing opportunities to increase sustainability within DOT projects in conjunction with DOT’s goal of providing a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of pedestrians, goods, and vehicular traffic within the City's transportation network. The position, Green Infrastructure Planner, reports to the Assistant Director of Green Infrastructure.
The position’s duties include managing the design review on a portfolio of DEP right-of-way green infrastructure stormwater management projects to ensure they comply with DOT street design standards and guidelines. These projects include the installation of porous pavement, stormwater greenstreets, bioswales, and infiltration basins along city streets and sidewalks. The candidate will serve as an expert in the planning, development, and execution of the installations into the existing street and transportation system.
The candidate will be responsible for communicating with DEP, various other city agencies and stakeholders to ensure that the projects are comprehensively developed by supporting Citywide traffic and pedestrian initiatives. The candidate will liaise with other DOT units, distribute design submissions, review technical drawing and design details, analyze transportation and traffic data, coordinate DOT feedback on projects from numerous divisions, update project schedules and create maps to provide information on proposed green infrastructure projects, prepare reports and other related duties.
The candidate will manage, review and evaluate results of DOT’s in-house permeable pavement pilot projects, work closely with DOT Capital Project Initiation and Capital Project Engineering staff to oversee recommendations of the city’s Cloudburst initiatives as well as other sustainable stormwater initiatives in DOT street reconstruction projects. The candidate will research and advise staff on sustainable policy into specific projects, determine priorities and provides expert technical assistance to relevant groups at DOT.

1. A master's degree in transportation engineering, mathematics, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or related physical and social science fields; or
2. A baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs; or
3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or
4. An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or
5. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above.
SPECIAL NOTE:
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements above:
To be assigned to Assignment Level II, the candidate must have an additional year of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.
To be assigned to Assignment Level III, the candidate must have an additional two years of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
