Job Description

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is seeking a creative, hard-working graphic designer who can design for both digital and print mediums. Reporting directly to Executive Director of Creative Services, the ideal candidate will manage, among other duties, demanding, highly-visible, and large-scale design projects, including for citywide initiatives like Summer Streets, Vision Zero, Open Streets, Car-Free Earth Day, and more. The selected candidate should posess the ability to present creative concepts to the Executive Director of Creative Services and other agency staff, work with stakeholder on development, and oversee successful execution. This includes, recommending the best ways to visually communicate new safety and transportation improvement projects for the public across the various NYC DOT channels (print, web, and social media). Maintain existing NYC DOT brand and Vision Zero style guides. Design logos, icons, illustrations, postcards, flyers, posters, invitations, ads, brochures, banners, signage, diagrams and reports for print, websites, mobile apps, and social media platforms. Create animations and motion graphics for digital campaigns, websites and promotional content. Develop layouts, UI components and interactive elements that align with brand guidelines. Collaborate with agency developers to ensure designs translate effectively into functional UX web and app experiences. Design marketing materials, including banners, email templates, and digital ads as well as enhance brand consistency across digital touchpoints. Optimize designs for different screen sizes, ensuring responsiveness and usability. Stay updated on design trends, animation techniques, and emerging technologies.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

BFA in graphic design or related art/design degree with 5 years of full-time, professional graphic design work experience. Superior graphic design ability and an excellent print/web portfolio. Must have extensive knowledge of graphic design, typography, color theory, digital printing process and Fiery output. Must be expert in graphic design for social media and web, as well as an understanding of user interface and web technologies. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects), Microsoft Office Suite and Extensis Connect/Portfolio. Experience with motion graphics, animations, and video editing. Ability to design for different social media formats and platforms. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript (not mandatory but preferred).

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
