Under NYC Parks’ Communications office, the Digital Media division develops the official Parks website, NYC Tree Map, partner websites, and email newsletter system. In addition, we’re responsible for designing and building custom web applications for high-profile public-facing Mayoral, City Council, and agency projects. Join a small agile team of developers, designers, project managers, and content producers to support the creation of compelling and dynamic web experiences for over 8 million unique visitors to the Parks website each year, as well as critical content management systems used daily by staff and partners.
Major Responsibilities
- Under general direction, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, performs very responsible work in the supervision, planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring and/or evaluation of map-based community development programs.
- Develop and improve interactive web maps -- including map features, services, and styles -- which are designed to inform and elicit community feedback, using both open source and ArcGIS Online (AGOL) solutions.
- Administer and configure open-source map tile server to ensure timely map regeneration and map accuracy.
- Fully document technical implementation details of new and updated mapping applications.
- Gather, review, and verify GIS data captured in the field, and through crowd-sourced online communities.
- Work closely in conjunction with a small team of fellow engineers, designers, and project managers, communicating regularly in Slack and via email, and updating progress in JIRA project tracking software.
- Collaborate with Parks GIS team to ensure web map solutions meet agency standards.

MOVEMENT IN THE FACE OF CIVIL SERVICE LISTS IS PROHIBITED UNDER CIVIL SERVICE LAW.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
1. Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computer science, or a closely related field. 2. Understanding of map design, usability standards, web technologies, and their practical application. 3. Strong desire to grow and expand skillset. 4. Working knowledge of PostgreSQL and MySQL databases and queries. 5. Familiarity with AWS-based hosting infrastructure. 6. Excellent writing, analytical, organizational, communication, and time management skills.
