The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. Green infrastructure collects stormwater from streets, sidewalks, and other hard surfaces before it can enter the sewer system or cause local flooding. By reducing the amount of stormwater that flows into the Sewer System, green infrastructure helps prevent Sewer Overflows and improves the health of local waterways.
The Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection is seeking (2) Community Outreach Coordinators for the NYC Green Infrastructure Maintenance Program.
Under general supervision, the selected candidates will have following responsibilities:
- Serve as a primary point of contact and liaison in Green Infrastructure Maintenance for community stake holders, non-government organizations, Bureau and Agency colleagues, consultants,
contractors and local elected officials on matters regarding outreach, volunteer and stewardship opportunities/activities, Rain Garden education, maintenance training, project development and
coordination.
- Work collaboratively with Green Infrastructure Maintenance administrators, supervisors and Bureau and Agency colleagues to plan new initiatives, programs and projects that advance,
enhance
or improve the unit’s capability to effectively maintain its entire portfolio of green infrastructure practices.
- Proactively develop relationships with members of the public, communities, non-government organizations, and other entities interested in supporting the Green Infrastructure Program.
- Identify the need for, create, edit, update and present educational materials to community stake holders, non-government organizations and other volunteer and stewardship groups.
- Provide resources, including tools and equipment, to volunteers and stewardship groups on an as need basis.
- Coordinate, host and support events for Green Infrastructure Maintenance providing day-of-event support as needed.
COMMUNITY COORDINATOR - 56058
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
The ideal candidates will have the ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with BEPA staff, grantee/property owners, agency representatives, and the public. Applicants are encouraged to have a valid driver’s license. - Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. - Experience engaging and community stakeholders in work efforts. - Skills in creating documents and presentations using common computer applications. - Ability to organize multiple priorities - Basic GIS proficiency - Ability to complete work and provided assigned deliverables of a high quality by deadline
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
