Job Description
The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The selected candidate will serve as an intern in the Freight Mobility (FM) unit within the Division of Transportation Planning and Management, supporting a variety of sustainable delivery and safety-related programs and initiatives. The FM unit is responsible for developing freight-supportive street infrastructure projects and transformative programs and policies to improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of goods movement in NYC, ensuring individuals, businesses, and affected communities have equitable access to the goods they need without compromising livability. A few of the programs the intern will support include microhubs, cargo bikes, blue highways, safety-related outreach, and street improvement projects as well as many other initiatives outlined in the Delivery New York and Delivering Green reports.
The candidate will be responsible for supporting managers in all aspects of project planning and implementation, such as assisting with project research, mapping, and coordination, field visits, photography, data and policy analysis, outreach, preparation of presentations, reports, and best practices assessments. They will also assist in compiling data analyses, and conduct research in support of project delivery, evaluate site locations and the processes involved in coordinating street improvement projects.
The candidate will learn project management skills within a city government setting on projects that help save lives and lead the way on innovative solutions to improving how goods move throughout NYC.
Preferred Skills
Writing and public speaking skills; experience with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and GIS software such as ArcMap or QGIS. Experience with managing and cleaning large data a plus; working knowledge of CRM software, Python (and other programing languages), data visualization platforms (such as a Power BI) also a plus but not required.
Hours/Shift: 17 hours/week during school; 35 hours/week when on break

For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
