Job Description

NYC Parks is the steward of over 30,000 acres of land 14 percent of New York City including more than 5,000 individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. We look after 600,000 street trees, and two million more in parks.

The Division of Environment and Planning aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City's green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group within Environment and Planning manages over 10,000 acres of natural areas across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands, and has secured tens of millions of dollars of grant from state, federal and private sources over the past decades to fund restoration and management across these ecosystems.

The newly developed Natural Resources Training Program is a green job training and employment program, providing a pathway into environmentally focused careers for underserved communities. This opportunity is within the Monitoring track, one of the four tracks offered by the Natural Resources Training Program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under supervision, assist in conducting ecological and other monitoring in the City’s natural areas parkland across New York City.
- Assist with forest health monitoring, including plant and wildlife identification, in restoration and management sites.
- Assist with rare, threatened, and endangered species monitoring to inform natural areas protection.
- Accurately locate monitoring areas using GPS or other handheld devices that use ArcGIS software. Utilize paper data sheets, tablet-based applications, and specialized technical equipment to gather accurate data.
- Assist in data entry, QA/QC, and analysis as needed.
- Assist with literature and policy reviews and drafting reports and presentations using monitoring results.
- Perform safety checks and inventories of facilities and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements
1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.


Preferred Skills

1. A valid New York State driver license. 2. Ability to work under adverse conditions (heat, early/late hours, inclement weather, muddy and/or wet conditions). 3. Experience working in natural areas or coursework on natural areas or other related environmental topics. 4. Experience conducting monitoring in natural areas and familiarity with NYC flora and fauna. 5. Strong writing, public speaking/presentation, and problem-solving skills. 6. Ability to work effectively as part of a team or independently. 7. Experience working with volunteers, students, interns, or trainees.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam, or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
