Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The New York City Department of Correction seeks to recruit a highly motivated individual to serve as the FMLA Leave Coordinator within the Human Resources Personnel Division. Under the direction of the Director of Employee Services, the FMLA Leave Coordinator will play a critical role in administering and managing all aspects of employee leave programs, including Family Medical Leave (FMLA), Paid Parental Leave (PPL), Paid Family Leave (PFL), and Childcare Leave. The FMLA Leave Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that all leave requests are processed in accordance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, while maintaining accurate documentation and data integrity across employee records. This position requires strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication with employees, supervisors, and external partners to provide clear guidance and consistent support on leave-related matters. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Assist in the administration of all leave programs within the unit, including Family and Medical Leave (FMLA), Paid Parental Leave (PPL), Paid Family Leave (PFL), and Childcare Leave, ensuring adherence to applicable laws and agency policies;
- Review and evaluate leave applications to verify accuracy of leave type, commencement and duration, and completeness of required documentation;
- Calculate employee work hours and leave balances to determine eligibility in accordance with program guidelines;
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders to verify and clarify supporting documentation and ensure consistent application of policy;
- Provide employees with clear guidance and support on all categories of leave via phone, email, and in-person consultations;
- Assist with related human resources functions, including employee verifications, resignation processing, and Workers’ Compensation data preparation and analysis, in alignment with unit and agency needs;
- Perform related duties as assigned or necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
