The NYPD strives to foster a safe city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Candidate Assessment Division (CAD) is responsible for overseeing the character investigation, physical agility testing, medical screening, and psychological testing of candidates seeking uniformed and civilian employment with the New York City Police Department.

CAD is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Fitness Instructor, Level I.

The candidate selected will be responsible for conducting fitness assessments for uniformed members of the service, Police Officer candidates, Police Cadet candidates, and School Safety Agent candidates for hire. They will monitor the health and safety of those participating in the job standard test and they will review all paperwork and data on candidates as they relate to the assessment. They will also tutor and demonstrate techniques for participants, and familiarize the candidates with the apparatuses used for the fitness assessments.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements
Certifications in First Aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) issued by the American Red Cross or other organization having an equivalent certification program recognized by the employing agency, and:
1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a major in nutrition, exercise physiology, health and fitness, physical education or a closely related field, plus 4 years of full-time paid experience in one or more of these areas, 1 year of which must have been in teaching exercise techniques; or

2. An Associate degree from an accredited college with a major in nutrition, exercise physiology, health and fitness, physical education or a closely related field, plus 6 years of full-time paid experience in one or more of these areas, 1 year of which must have been in teaching exercise techniques; or

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
