The Division of Family and Child Health (DFCH) of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is charged with the creation and oversight of programs, policies, services, and environments that support physical and socio-emotional health, and promote primary and reproductive health services, health equity, social justice, safety and well-being for New York City families and children. The Division is comprised of the Bureau of Maternal Infant and Reproductive Health, the Bureau of Early Intervention, the Office of School Health, and the Bureau of Administration. The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene which is responsible for promoting the health of the 1.3 million school children enrolled in approximately 1,800 public and non-public schools in New York City. OSH has been the provider of public health services in school settings for 100 years and serves as advocates for the health and well-being of the children and adolescents throughout New York City. DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

Under the direction of the Medical Unit Leadership, the Central Office Physician's duties will include but are not limited to:
Serving as a consultant for all medical accommodation requests
Completing Accommodation Reviews (Home Instruction, Transportation/Medical Exception, Diabetes Medication Administration Form Reviews, Paraprofessional Reviews, and Immunization Exemption Reviews) efficiently, using sound clinical judgment, initiating coordination services when appropriate.
Consulting with community primary care providers and specialists to review accommodations requests when needed in order to ensure appropriate care coordination
Integrating information from multiple agency sources and communication with primary care providers in order to determine the appropriate level of service for each accommodation request.
Reviewing and assisting with in-school case management
Performing clinical case reviews as requested by the Medical Director
Advocating for the health needs of students as outlined by their diagnosis and related accommodation requests and current services.
Participating in the Program's public health initiatives/exploratory research projects/quality improvement programs.
Functioning as a leading medical expert for the school community as part of multi-disciplinary, multi-agency collaboration to review and implement accommodations for students.
Remaining well-informed of health management policy statements and emerging research within the health community affecting school health.
Remaining up to date with all OSH policies and protocols.
Attending all mandated training, staff developments and CMEs provided by OSH


Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and either:
a) Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or
b) Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency.
To be assigned to Assignment Level II, individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I described above, one year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area.
To be assigned to Assignment Level III, individuals must possess:
a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
b) A Master's degree in Public Health, or equivalent Master's degree, including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics. Completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to substitute for this Master's degree; and
c) At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Master's degree, or equivalent, in the practice of epidemiology. Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may be substituted for one year of this experience.
To be assigned to Assignment Level IV, individuals must possess:
a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
b) Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, or family practice, or pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and
c) Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty; and
d) Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, or pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.


Preferred Skills

Experience with clinical and/or administrative supervision. Effective communication and interpersonal skills proficiency in internet usage and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook). Board Certification in Pediatrics or Adolescent Health Master's Degree in Public Health (MPH). Excellent customer service skills.
