The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY) seeks a full-time Associate Inspector (Electrical) level II in the Bureau of Fire Prevention's Fire Alarm Inspection Unit. Reporting directly to the Area Manager, the successful candidate will supervise and train Associate Inspectors level I in the field. Conduct highly complex inspections of life safety and emergency systems in large areas, super high-rise and mixed use buildings, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, rules of the City of NY and national standards. Direct complex phased installations, such as life safety systems in super high-rise buildings more than 420ft, in facilities in excess of one million square feet and mixed use occupancies incorporating several networked life safety systems.
1. Six years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations for light, heat and/or power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection or communication systems; or
2. Four years of experience as described in “1” above, and one of the following: (a) 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or (b) Two years of full-time training in an acceptable electrical program in an accredited technical school; or
3. Completion of an apprentice program, at least three years in length, in the electrical trade or electrical inspection and either (a) three years of experience as described in “1” above or (b) one year of experience as described in “1” above and 60 credits or two years of education as described in “2” above; or
4. A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law.
5. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1,” “2,” or “3” above.
6. To be eligible for placement to Assignment Level II, individuals other than licensed professional engineers or registered architects must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of experience as described in “1” above, in a supervisory capacity.
Extensive knowledge of the New York City Fire Code, New York City Building Code, Natural Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and other related regulations. Excellent verbal and communication skills. Extensive knowledge of life safety systems- Class E, J and other complex systems. specific knowledge of NFPA 72. Bachelor Degree of Arts or Bachelor Degree of Science and previous experience in design, installation or inspection of fire protection systems. One (1) year of field inspection experience in the FAIU or fire alarm industry as an installer. Excellent Knowledge of the FAIU operation.
