The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. Green infrastructure collects stormwater from streets, sidewalks, and other hard surfaces before it can enter the sewer system or cause local flooding. By reducing the amount of stormwater that flows into the Sewer System, green infrastructure helps prevent Sewer Overflows and improves the health of local waterways.
The Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection is seeking an Exterminator level 2 for the NYC Green Infrastructure Maintenance Program.
Under general supervision, the selected candidate will have the following primary responsibilities:
- Performs detailed inspections of Green Infrastructure assets and facilities and provides expert guidance in treatment responses.
- Select, prepare, and deploy the most effective and efficient insecticides, rodenticides, baits and traps for exterminating pests as required.
- Prepare weekly reports including records of equipment usage, work schedules and exterminating operations performed.
- Develop long term control plans utilizing integrated pest management techniques for Green Infrastructure assets.
- Identify, treat and report invasive insect species.
- Manage and implement larvicide program in summer months.
- Coordinates and schedules work assignments.
- Operates DEP vehicles and equipment safely.
- May supervise assigned personnel.
- Will ensure compliance with all federal, state and city pesticide regulations and record keeping requirements.
- Interact with staff and the public in a courteous and professional manner.
A valid certificate as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator for Industrial, Institutional, structural and Rodent Control (7A) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This certificate must be maintained for the duration of appointment.
License Requirement
For appointment to certain positions, at the time of appointment eligibles must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
SPECIAL NOTE:
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, two years of full-time satisfactory practical experience in the preparation and use of insecticides, rodenticides, baits, traps, and related chemicals/equipment for the extermination of insects, vermin and other pests.
SPECIAL NOTE:
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, two years of full-time satisfactory practical experience in the preparation and use of insecticides, rodenticides, baits, traps, and related chemicals/equipment for the extermination of insects, vermin and other pests and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in a supervisory capacity for a total of three years experience.
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing and have the ability to establish and maintain constructive working relationships with BEPA staff and the public. must be organized and must demonstrate attention to detail and a clear understanding of safety protocols for vehicle use. - Strong MS Office skills, including Excel. - Experience creating reports, reviewing data and developing long range pest management plans for facilities and assets. - Ability to manage many projects simultaneously and with accuracy.
