The Team You’ll Work With:
The NYC Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice (MOERJ) was established in October 2023 and serves as New York City government’s centralized equity office. Focusing on developing critical, equity-driven strategies across our diverse communities, MOERJ includes the Commission on Gender Equity (CGE), the Young Men’s Initiative (YMI), and the NYC Unity Project (UP) as well as multi-agency bodies like the Pay Equity Cabinet (PEC) and the Taskforce on Racial Inclusion & Equity (TRIE).

The NYC Young Men’s Initiative is the nation’s most comprehensive municipal effort to tackle the broad disparities impacting the advancement of young men of color. For over decade, YMI has established innovative public-private partnerships and invested in programs and policies that have improved outcomes related to education, health, employment, and the criminal justice system.


The Problems You’ll Solve:
YMI is integral to the Administration’s goal to close disparities impacting young men of color. YMI will develop new programs and policies that are designed to address disparities across numerous outcomes and break down barriers to success. YMI will work across city agencies and systems to help young men of color achieve their professional, educational, and personal goals.

Reporting to the NYC Chief Equity Officer & Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice, the Executive Director will lead and implement the strategic vision and mission for YMI, as well as oversee operations, functions, activities, and directly manage staff. As a member of the MOERJ leadership team, the Executive Director will work ensure the needs of young Black and Latino men are prioritized throughout the City’s equity priorities – consistently identifying new opportunities to expand the reach and impact of YMI.

The Executive Director works closely with staff throughout MOERJ, as well as agency partners including, NYC Opportunity, Mayor’s Office of Talent & Workforce Development, New York City Public Schools, Department of Youth and Community Development, the NYC Department of Education, and community-based organizations.


Responsibilities:
- Oversee the development of new programs and policies that are designed to address disparities between young men of color and their peers across numerous outcomes related to education, health, employment, and the criminal justice system.
- Develop an updated strategic plan for YMI -- engaging staff, agency partners, youth, private and nonprofit partners, and key stakeholders, to identify new areas of opportunity to increase YMI’s impact.
- Create and execute a YMI fundraising, marketing, and community outreach strategy --increasing public-private partnerships, philanthropic investment, public awareness, and youth engagement in YMI programming.
- Oversee and implement appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate. Work closely with the Deputy Executive Director to manage the YMI program budget and ensure resources are maximized.
- Work closely with the Deputy Executive Director, ensure YMI-funded programs advance in a timely manner and achieve intended outcomes across a range of agency partners.
- Support the YMI team in solving complex procurement, budget, and other challenges that may impact program success; escalate issues of importance as needed.
- Ensure the impact of YMI is routinely documented and, through evaluation, build an evidence base of best practices in serving young men of color and reducing disparities.
- Routinely amplify the work of YMI, exchanging lessons learned with New York City government partners, as well as with other municipalities.
- Lead YMI staff, ensuring that the mission is fulfilled through programs and strategic planning.
- Support staff professional development, constantly identifying new areas of opportunity for growth for the YMI team.
- Represent YMI and MOERJ on cabinets, taskforces, workgroups, and other collaborative bodies addressing issues of importance to young men of color.
- Serve as the point person for YMI across relevant city agencies, and with external stakeholders.
- Represent YMI in community meetings, events, hearings, press events, and other public forums as needed.


About You:
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and at least five to seven (5-7) years of professional experience, OR a master’s degree and two to four (2-4) years of professional experience, including at least twelve (12) months of executive, managerial, administrative, and/or supervisory experience.
- A demonstrated commitment, competency and strong familiarity with issues affecting young Black and Latino men and low-to-moderate income communities in New York City.
- Evidence of a strong background in the fields of youth development, health and human services, economic development, program administration, and/or public policy.
- Ability to problem solve and make decisions in a timely manner.
- Strong management and supervisory skills with demonstrated ability to provide technical assistance that can drive groups towards meeting identified outcome goals.
- Entrepreneurial leader with the ability to think creatively, embrace new, intersectional approaches and pioneer innovative solutions to intricate problems, while working collaboratively with a diverse constituency.
- Strong leadership management and project management skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and undertake several critical projects at one time.
- Knowledge of city agencies and city government systems.
- Excellent written, communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, a strong ability to work well with others in a diverse team environment, and an enthusiastic work ethic.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility.


Salary:
The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role is $150,000-$165,000. Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other factors.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Do you have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university?

2. Do you have an associate degree from an accredited college or university along with two (2) years of experience with administrative, analytic, coordinative, supervisory or liaison responsibilities?

3. Do you have a four-year high school diploma, or its educational equivalent approved by a state's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization along with four (4) years of experience as described in question "2" above?

4. Do you have a satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that described in questions "1," "2," and/or "3" above?
