The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters provides legal guidance to the Police Department and is responsible for advising all members of the Department on all legal matters affecting the Department, including major criminal and civil litigation and important legislative and judicial developments. The office monitors and facilitates the relationship between the Department and the rest of the criminal justice system and assists members of the service in interpreting and enforcing state, federal, and local laws; ensures that the policies and practices of the department are lawful and are fairly applied and develops legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns. In addition, the Bureau serves as the Department's liaison to the court-appointed Federal Monitor.

Reporting to the Director, Federal Monitor Liaison Unit, the selected Executive Agency Counsel, M-I will:

- Draft responses to reports from the court appointed Monitor
- Facilitate the retrieval of documents, data and recordings, as well as access to personnel and facilities, requested by the court appointed Monitor
- Coordinate and aid in the preparation for meetings with the court appointed Monitor


Minimum Qualifications

Admission to the New York State Bar; and four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work.

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.


Preferred Skills

- This position requires admission to the New York State Bar and at least 8 years of recent, full-time, relevant legal experience. Prior experience should include significant litigation experience in the areas of constitutional and criminal law. - Ability to manage highly complex and sensitive legal work, while maintaining priorities and proactively anticipating issues. - Experience working collaboratively and cross-functionally with stakeholders and outstanding written and verbal skills. - Familiarity with DeBour jurisprudence

However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
