Job Description

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

Under administrative direction, with latitude for independent judgement, the incumbent will perform the following duties but are not limited to:

- Instruct and test subordinate general job knowledge regarding duties and responsibilities
- Prepare written instructions for subordinate Peace Officers and contract security personnel.
- Ensure personnel under command respond to all assignments in an expeditious manner
- Review and evaluate subordinates (Interaction reports, behavior, etc.)
- Conduct inspections of personnel, posts, and physical security system
- Delegate administrative tasks (Event planning, Project Management, Vendor POC, etc.)
- Review and approve subordinate time, leave and requests for compensation via City time
- Review all department directives, prepare applicable reports and correspondence
- Supervise the maintenance of department records, files, controlled items (e.g., Shields, Parking Permits, etc.)
- Oversee field operations including Incident response, investigations, details, special projects, large scale events, conferences, drills and training
- Provide direct support for agency physical security system(s) integration and project design documentation
- Identify and quantify vulnerabilities in the agency physical security program.
- Develop requirements for department personnel in support of the security program


Minimum Qualifications

A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; and

a. Two years of full-time, satisfactory experience in the areas of security, law enforcement and/or active military duty; or

b. Successful completion of 60 college semester credits at an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0 cumulative index grade point average.

Driver License Requirement: By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. If you have moving violations, license suspension(s) or an accident record, you may be disqualified. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

Special Patrolman Requirement: At the time of appointment, you must meet the following qualifications for Special Patrolman status (a status given by the New York City Police Department pursuant to Title 38, Chapter 13 of the Rules of the City of New York).

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to the minimum qualification requirements, at least one year of experience in Assignment Level I or in a supervisory capacity.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
