The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. This position performs specialized technical work in the inspection of construction, repairs and alterations of residential and commercial building envelopes, mechanical systems and lighting installations for conformity with the NYC Energy Conservation Code.
Under general supervision:
- Inspect construction, repairs and alterations in residential and commercial buildings for conformity with the NYC Energy Conservation Code (Energy Code), NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, other pertinent laws and rules, and approved plans and specifications.
- Respond to, investigates, and reports on accidents, incidents and complaints.
- Conduct investigations and studies involving monitoring, surveillance, research and analysis of the construction, alteration or repair of buildings as it relates to the compliance with and violation of the Energy Code, Building Code, and other pertinent laws and rules regarding structures, materials, applications, and methods of construction.
- Studies architectural and engineering drawings of building envelopes, mechanical systems and lighting installations to plan inspections and uses them as a reference during inspections.
- Issue violations and summonses.
- Verbally communicate, in a clear and precise manner, to advise the recipient of the nature of the violating condition.
- Maintain computerized records and create written reports per Department standards.
- Testify as needed, including at Environmental Control Board (ECB), depositions, and court.
- Thoroughly understand, clearly explain and thoughtfully enforce laws and rules relevant to Energy Code compliance and energy efficiency.
- May operate a motor vehicle in the performance of their duties.
- May be on call or required to work nights, early mornings, and weekends, when necessary.
Some of the physical activities performed by Inspectors (Construction) and environmental conditions experienced are: walking to and from inspection sites and, during the course of inspections, climbing and descending ladders and stairs to get to areas to be inspected; standing on scaffolds to inspect work; standing for extended periods of time; working in confined areas; wearing hard hats; bending and stooping during inspections; climbing over and around various objects; walking in areas that may be damp, dark, dusty, smoky or acrid; and working outdoors in all kinds of weather.
Candidates must successfully pass a drug screening to be appointed.

You must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. If you have moving violations, license suspension or an accident record, you may be disqualified. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

INSPECTOR (ELECTRICAL FOR PAYR - 31623
1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations, light, heat and/or power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection or communication systems; or
2. Three years of experience as described in “1” above, and one of the following:
(a) 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or
(b) Two years of full-time training in an acceptable electrical program in an accredited technical school; or"
3. Completion of an apprentice program, at least three years in length, in the electrical trade or electrical inspection and either (a) two years of experience as described in “1” above or (b) 60 credits or two years of education as described in “2” above; or
4. A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law; or
5. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1,” “2,” or “3” above.
License Requirements
At the time of appointment, you must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. If you have moving violations, license suspension(s) or an accident record, you may be disqualified. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
For certain assignments, candidates must qualify for appointment as Special Patrolman. This status must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills - Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain & adjust daily schedule - Working knowledge of the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Conservation Code, and Zoning Resolution - Experience with REScheck and COMcheck
