About DVS
The mission of the Department of Veterans’ Services is to connect, mobilize, and empower New York City’s Veteran Community in order to foster purpose-driven lives for New York City Service Members – past and present – in addition to their caregivers, survivors, and families. DVS fulfills this mission by providing New York City’s approximately 200,000 Veterans with essential services and programs focused on pivotal areas such as economic empowerment, housing security, benefits, health and wellness, and culture.
About the Role: Employment Specialist DVS is actively seeking to hire an Employment Specialist who will play a key role in assisting the Military Affiliated Community in accessing meaningful and sustainable employment opportunities across a diverse range of sectors, including public, private, and government industries. This position will focus on guiding individuals toward job placements that align with their skills, experiences, and career goals. In addition to employment placement, the Employment Specialist will also provide critical support by connecting constituents with relevant workforce development programs, ensuring they have access to the training, resources, and support needed to successfully transition into the workforce and advance in their careers.
The Employment Specialist would work closely with DVS’ Director of Veteran Transition and her team on efforts including, but not limited to:
- Assisting military-affiliated individuals in identifying and securing meaningful employment opportunities across the public, private, and government sectors.
- Conducting job searches, provide job leads, and connect clients to appropriate employers.
- Supporting clients in tailoring resumes, writing cover letters, and preparing for interviews.
- Offering individualized career counseling to military-affiliated individuals, helping them assess their skills, qualifications, and career goals.
- Advising on job market trends, wage expectations, and employment opportunities that align with clients' skills and experiences.
- Connecting clients to relevant workforce development programs, training opportunities, certifications, and educational resources that support career advancement.
- Identifying and recommend programs or workshops that enhance clients' job readiness and career growth. EEO Approval Authorized Signature: Date:

- Maintaining accurate records of clients’ progress, job applications, employment status, and outcomes.
- Tracking and report on employment placement outcomes, program participation, and other key performance indicators.
- Assessing and evaluate the effectiveness of the services provided and suggest improvements as necessary.

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
This position is also open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program.
