The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
Intern will assist the Emergency Management Programs & Projects with:
- Continuity of Operations Planning (COOP); Development Support. The Preparedness & Resilience Division is currently working its way through the agency to provide divisional and unit-level support to develop and maintain COOP Plans at the more granular level. While we do have an overall agency COOP Plan, we are looking to drill down to a more detailed level to provide support and expertise to help each unique unit continue to fulfill their missions even in times of emergency.
- Emergency Operations; Activation/De-Activation Procedure & Policy, Staffing & Training. Our team is working to develop agencywide policy pertaining to the Incident Command System (ICS), and how it will lay the foundation for agency response to emergency activations and on-the-fly operations. This will include building coordination and communications planning into policy and working with various units to integrate emergency operations into their established procedures.
- Operations Integrity; Infrastructure Resilience, Emergency Planning Development Support. The Preparedness & Resilience Division is developing a serious of infrastructure and built-environment focused contingency plans to account for any compromise or adverse conditions to any of our critical systems, utilities, and infrastructure. In addition, because the agency is transitioning its operations into a Borough-based facility focus, we are also working to proactively build these plans, protections, and principles into the new designs and policy for these newly built facilities.
- Special Events. Support the development and facilitation of our upcoming Annual Symposium, various Table-top exercises, and incident after action reports.
As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
We are currently seeking a student who possesses exceptional communication skills, is a critical thinker and is both enthusiastic and curious. The successful intern will have the opportunity to assist with a range of projects that involve research, analysis and administrative tasks.
