Job Description

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting, and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. We deliver 1.1billion gallons of high-quality drinking water per day to 8.5 million New York City residents and more than 1million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day.

The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage, including wastewater treatment plants, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates), wastewater laboratories, harbor vessels and sludge dewatering facilities.

Under direct supervision of the Area Engineer, the selected candidate will perform electrical engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility and may supervise subordinate employees.
Job Duties will include but not limited to:
- Under general supervision performs responsible supervisory work or difficult responsible work in electrical engineering by preparing or supervising the preparation of the basic design plan or significant or complex portions of basic design plans for major projects for the construction. remodeling, or maintenance of public works for capital and JOC projects.
- Prepares reports on contracts and contracts estimates contract modifications and recommendations of award.
- Prepares or supervises staff and consultants in the preparation of specifications and drawings for basic, significant, or complex major capital and JOC projects.
- Serves as a consultant to the Department and supervises a team of design engineers including multidiscipline investigations with Department staff or outsourced consultants for major and very complex engineering matters and efforts, coordinates meetings and activities required between department persons, contractors, and outside agencies related to projects.
- Generates and reviews proposals, checks contractor work performance, and resolves problems for multiple major engineering capital and JOC projects.
- Ensures designs and projects are compliance with contract specifications, building codes, and other pertinent statues, rules, and regulations. Certifies or stamps design documents prepared by self or others when directed by the DEP.

Minimum Qualifications

(1) Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; and
(2) A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License. Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
A masters degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be substituted for one year of the electrical engineering experience required in “1" above.


Preferred Skills

-Electrical engineering principles and their application -Experience in the wastewater industry -Familiarity with AutoCAD, MS Project, MS Words, MS Excel, and E-Gordian software -Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to technical and non-technical staff -Strong technical writing and communication skills -A valid NYS Driver's License which must be maintained for the duration of employment
