With an overarching mission to eliminate ageism and ensure the dignity and quality of life of approximately 1.775 million older New Yorkers, the NYC Department for the Aging is deeply committed to helping older adults age in their homes and creating a community-care approach that reflects a model age-inclusive city.
To provide a comprehensive crime and elder abuse program for victims/survivors aged 60 and over. The program will provide direct services to victims and their families citywide. These services include, but are not limited to: crisis intervention, providing short and long-term counseling to victims of elder abuse and/or crime victims including accessing victims for depression/anxiety and refer to the PROTECT program for mental health services, provide information and referral, conducting risk assessment screenings and developing safety plans, follow up services, advocacy, counseling services to victims individually and to their family, assistance with home security devise installation, and referrals for emergency financial assistance. The program assists victims with completing the NYS Office of Victim service claim form. The program also provides case consultation support to community professional/agencies.
NYC Aging Office of Elder Justice seeks a highly motivated, organized, and detail-oriented individual to provide comprehensive crime and elder abuse assistance for victims and/or survivors aged 60 and over. The Elder Justice Coordinator will provide direct services to victims and their families citywide. These services include, but are not limited to: crisis intervention, providing short and long-term counseling to victims of elder abuse and/or crime victims including accessing victims for depression and anxiety.
Under supervision, with latitude for independent work with wide latitude for independent action, the Elder Justice Coordinator will provide direct services to victims of elder abuse and crime including but not limited to the following:
- Provide short and long-term counseling to victims of elder abuse and/or crime victims including accessing victims for depression/anxiety and refer to the PROTECT program for mental health services.
- Conduct in-person assessment intakes and telephone inquiry intakes.
- Provide information and referral to elder abuse victims or caregivers of elder abuse victims.
- Conduct risk assessment screenings and developing safety plans for victims of elder abuse.
- Act as an Agency liaison for program referents and collateral contacts.
- Conduct home visits and providing supportive contact.
- Assist elder abuse clients with completing various NYS Office of Victim Service applications.
- Work in collaboration with the NYPD, District Attorney's Offices, the Community Based Elder Abuse Contractors, other New York City partner agencies to identify and support clients.
- Maintain accurate client records and enter all client information in the NYC Aging's data system accurately and in a timely manner.
- Participate in case discussion groups, task forces, trainings and multi-disciplinary team meetings to support complex case solving and coordination.
- Conduct community outreach and provide trainings within the community to cultivate safety and awareness.
- Supervise MSW students case work including providing SIFI supervision.
- Assist with RFP reading and other projects as needed.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills: - The Selected candidate must be mission driven and committed to making an impact in improving services for older adults in NYC who are victims of elder abuse/crime. - Extensive knowledge and experience in elder abuse and/or crime victim services strongly preferred. - Knowledge and experience working with older adults including resources and services that support older adults aging in place. - Ability to work in fast paced environment without compromise to quality of services including ability to prioritize and effectively manage time. - Excellent oral and written communications skills and capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. - Excellent organizational skills, ability to take initiative, problem solve, prioritize duties and work independently in a fast paced and team environment. - Master's degree in Social Work or closely related degree preferred but not required. - SIFI certification and ability to supervise and manage MSW interns a plus. - Bilingual (Spanish/Russian/Cantonese/Mandarin) a plus. - Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) a plus.
