Job Description

NYC Parks GreenThumb provides technical assistance, educational workshops, operational support and materials to community gardens throughout New York City. Supporting over 550 community gardens and 20,000 volunteer gardeners, GreenThumb is the largest community gardening program in the country. Employees who work for 6 months or longer are eligible for healthcare benefits. All seasonal employees earn sick and annual leave. All employees receive free membership to our recreation centers.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

- Under supervision of the Assistant Director, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, support GreenThumb’s events, workshops and training program.
- Develop community garden-specific programs in areas including but not limited to urban agriculture, community organizing, social justice, soil health, green infrastructure, native plants and pollinators, art, sustainability and ecology
- Develop and implement in-person and virtual educational programs that support gardeners in cultivating thriving urban community gardens.
- Assist garden groups and partner organizations in implementing public programs in community gardens.
- Assist with the coordination of special events; review proposals, conduct site visits, assess site requirements, develop work plans and manage public events on site.
- Build relationships with numerous stakeholders, including gardeners, environmental groups, community organizations, universities, and City agencies.
- Create and manage program budgets, assist with purchasing and track inventories of materials.
- Perform research, analyze data, prepare reports, and complete tasks as assigned in various areas related to urban gardening.

Work Location: 100 Gold Street, Manhattan

Duration: September 2025 to June 30, 2026

Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee of $85.00. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to an $101.25 background check fee.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

1. Master’s degree or some advanced training in a field related to the duties above. 2. Background or demonstrated interest in community gardening, open space management, urban agriculture or horticulture. 3. Strong oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. 4. Creative problem-solving skills. 5. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and work independently or in a team environment as needed. 6. Ability to work outdoors with a flexible work schedule, including events on evenings and weekends, as required. 7. Bilingual English/Spanish or proficiency in other language. 8. Valid New York State driver license.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
