Working closely with units across NYC DOT and the city's multi-agency Vision Zero Task Force, the Director of Safety Policy will develop, implement, and evaluate street safety policies, programs, and strategies. Reporting to the Assistant Commissioner for Policy, the Director will serve as the agency's subject matter expert on safety policy, keep abreast of innovative safety initiatives in other cities and countries, and conduct research and analysis on new and promising Vision Zero interventions. In coordination with the agency’s Intergovernmental Affairs unit, the Director will develop legislative priorities at the city, state, and federal level, prepare testimonies, letters, and comments, and support the agency's legislative advocacy efforts. The Director will work with the agency's Office of Research, Implementation, and Safety on monitoring fatality and injury statistics and trends and communicating the current state of road safety to senior leadership and City Hall. The Director will also be responsible for regular reporting on key safety initiatives, including the agency’s speed and redlight camera programs. The Director will frequently represent the agency on Vision Zero issues with outside stakeholders, including elected officials, industry and community groups, and advocacy organizations.
Admission to the New York State Bar; and four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work.
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
The preferred candidate is a well-organized self-starter with an enthusiasm for making New York City’s streets safer. The candidate will be working within a fast-paced environment and must have the ability to multi-task and quickly respond to issues as they arise. In addition, a successful candidate will have: - Strong writing and public presentation skills - Strong policy research, analysis, and evaluation skills - An understanding of street safety and related policy at the city, state and federal levels - Experience conducting outreach to elected officials, government agencies, and community stakeholders Statistical and data analysis skills are a plus for this position.
