Job Description

The Director of Radio Shop Operations will report directly to the Executive Director of Radio Repair Operations and work in coordination with other Radio Repair administrative/managerial, technical and clerical personnel. The Manager of Radio Repair Operations is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the daily technical operations of the Radio Repair Shop. This position plays a critical role in supporting the FDNY’s communications infrastructure by ensuring the repair, maintenance, and performance of essential radio and communication systems.

This position will include a wide range of responsibilities and tasks such as overseeing programming, updates, encryption of radios and other tasks and equipment associated with the Radio Repair Operations Unit, including but not limited to, technical day-to-day oversight of the Radio Repair Unit and the assignment of Radio Repair mechanic tasks. Coordination of Emergency Communications Transformations Program (ECTP) activities including scheduling and oversight of work assignments; participation in the evaluation and scheduling of new equipment, systems and special projects; attending various internal FDNY, and inter-agency communications meetings. In conjunction with other Radio Repair staff, ensure maximum effectiveness and efficiencies related to the Radio Repair Operations functions and responsibilities. Ensure compliance with industry wide standards and all FCC rules and regulations. Leads innovation and advanced diagnostics, acts as SME on Radio matters and upgrades and testing. Guides technical standards, engineering and project management. Manage critical infrastructure sites such as airports, tunnels and ensuring reliable operations and communication for emergency services.

Serve as a subject matter expert on radio frequency (RF) technologies, system interoperability, and emerging communication technologies relevant to public safety operations. Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of technicians

Minimum Qualifications

A Federal Communications Commission Radio Telephone General Class Operator's License with a radar endorsement, and
1. Nine years of recent experience in the repair and maintenance of communications equipment, at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; or

2. Education and experience equivalent to "1" above. Six months experience will be credited for each year of education acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school, college, or training program in electronics, electrical engineering or a related field, up to a maximum of eight years of education for four years of experience. However, all candidates must have the 18 months administrative, managerial or supervisory experience noted above.

License Requirement
A motor vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.


Preferred Skills

1. A First Class Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Radiotelephone License with radar endorsement 2. Ten years recent experience including at least 5 years in the area of management and administration in the repair and maintenance of communications equipment. Handie-Talkies (Portables), intercoms, medical telemetry radio systems, public address systems, subway communications systems, etc. or 3. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Applicants should also demonstrate the ability to manage and instruct personnel. Personnel seeking this position shall have served a minimum of 2 years in the title of Supervisor of Radio Repair Operations. 4. The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage diverse teams in a fast-paced environment. Exceptional multitasking abilities are essential, as the role requires balancing strategic oversight with day-to-day operational demands across multiple functions
