The Team You’ll Work With:
The NYC Mayor’s Office of Equity (MOE) was established in 2022 and serves as New York City government’s centralized equity office. Focusing on developing critical, equity-driven strategies across our diverse communities, MOE includes the Commission on Gender Equity (CGE), the Young Men’s Initiative (YMI), and the NYC Unity Project (UP) as well as multi-agency bodies like the Pay Equity Cabinet (PEC) and the Taskforce on Racial Inclusion & Equity (TRIE).

New York City is committed to identifying new strategies to address the disparities that girls and women are facing across our city. A new unit within the Mayor’s Office of Equity has been created and will be charged with innovating new public-private partnerships and initiatives, investing in new policies, and convening relevant partners to advance the outcomes for young women of color in NYC.


The Problems You’ll Solve:
Through the creation of this new unit, the City has declared its commitment to prioritize young women. This newly created unit will develop new programs and policies that are designed to address disparities impacting young women of color and their peers across numerous outcomes related to education, health, employment, and the criminal justice system. These programs and policies break down barriers to success and help young women achieve their professional, educational, and personal goals.


Responsibilities:
This individual will develop strategic partnerships and ensure that the unit is effectively communicating with all its stakeholders. This individual should be eager to join a creative, mission-focused team in a startup environment. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Strategic Partnerships
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with current partners that are mission-aligned with a focus on women and girls+.
- Strengthen and amplify the unit’s connection with the larger field.
- Identify appropriate funding and other revenue opportunities, including speaking engagements (media, conferences, and events).
- Develop and execute clear communication strategies to ensure all stakeholders are informed and engaged.
- Research and maintain an understanding of current trends and best practices in the field.
- Prepare information sharing documents.
- Establish and disseminate best practices and quality standards best practices to support the advancement of women and girls+.
- Represent the unit and broader office, as appropriate, at events, meetings, and other public-facing events.

Communications and Media
- Lead the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan, including traditional media and digital strategy, to support the unit’s programs, projects, events, and initiatives.
- Develop and manage relationships with media, government, and international partners to advance the unit’s communications equities.
- Lead on branding and develop innovative campaigns for the unit’s diverse programming.
- Create all social media content including, but not limited to, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, as well as content for blogs and medium post.
- Oversee drafting and dissemination of media advisories, press releases, press briefing material, and other external communications, as necessary.

Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare regular status reports for senior management on the effectiveness of the partnership and communication strategies.
- Create well-written, thoughtful talking points, speeches, and other documents for publications.
- Develop comprehensive program documentation, including plans, schedules, and project reports for public distribution.


About You:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working in communications, preferably mission-aligned work.
- Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., gender studies, public administration, communication).
- Deep understanding of the disparities that girls and women of color face and the current NYC landscape.
- Strong leadership as well as excellent writing and communication skills.
- Experience with developing communication and social media assets including press releases, press advisories, social media tiles.
- Experience writing remarks and talking points for senior leadership.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Understanding or familiarity with NYC government of design (i.e., Canva) preferred
- Ability to pivot quickly to address varying priorities
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility.
- Prior lived and/or work experience in communities facing historical oppression will contribute to your ability to help the office meet its racial justice mission.
- Demonstrated commitment, competency and familiarity with issues affecting Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, Middle Eastern, and/or Pacific Islander communities in New York City, or other marginalized groups.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, a strong ability to work well with others in a diverse team environment, and an enthusiastic work ethic.


Salary:
The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role is $95,000-$110,000. Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other factors.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Do you have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university?

2. Do you have an associate degree from an accredited college or university along with two (2) years of experience with administrative, analytic, coordinative, supervisory or liaison responsibilities?

3. Do you have a four-year high school diploma, or its educational equivalent approved by a state's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization along with four (4) years of experience as described in question "2" above?

4. Do you have a satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that described in questions "1," "2," and/or "3" above?
