The DCAS Office of Communications plays a vital role in promoting the agency and its brand to the constituencies we serve. The Director of Media Relations is an instrumental part of the Communications unit and develops and executes strategic communication plans to enhance the public image and reputation of the agency. In this role, the Director of Media Relations will manage all aspects of media relations, build strong relationships with key media outlets, and effectively communicate the agency’s messages to the public.
- Support the Chief of Public Information Officer in providing effective communication to the public, the news media, DCAS employees, city agencies, and other constituencies.
- Develop comprehensive media strategies aligned with the organization's goals and objectives. Identify target audiences and key messages to ensure effective communication.
- Guide the agency’s media relations efforts, including assisting with fielding press inquiries, drafting press releases, and pitching press stories.
- Develop and execute public relations campaigns to enhance the organization's reputation and increase public awareness.
- Write speeches and other public-facing materials on behalf of the agency’s senior leadership.
- Collaborate and help lead a team of communications professionals, including writers, graphic designers/artists, photographers/videographers, and digital marketers.
- Ensure that the agency’s marketing materials are cohesive, consistent with the agency’s brand, and reflect best practices for effective messaging and design. This includes working with and offering input to the agency’s graphic designers on visual design.
- Help support crafting and executing a social media plan using fun, creative, engaging, and high-quality content for various platforms. Find ways to build a social media presence that is unique, distinctive, and tells stories in ways that build an authentic connection with the audience.
- Help ensure agency communications are coherent, use plain language, and are accessible to diverse audiences.
- Assist with copyediting and manage assorted writing projects.
- Assist with the creative direction and production of video content as needed.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration; collaborate with other departments and teams within the agency to align communication efforts with overall business objectives.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with at least four (4) years of experience in media relations, marketing, social media, or a position utilizing similar skills; excellent writing skills
and the ability to think creatively and produce memorable, engaging work product.
2. A comfort with working with others to collaborate on the creation of communications work product; excellent project management, interpersonal, and leadership skills; strong attention to detail
and ability to meet frequent and changing deadlines; the ability to synthesize complex information and communicate it in easy-to-understand, plain language that is accessible to non-subject
matter experts; highly-motivated, hard-working, and possessing a strong desire to learn and grow.
- Experience with public sector marketing and communications. - Experience with email marketing campaigns. - Experience with Photoshop and other visual design software. - Experience with photography and photo editing.
