Traffic Control & Engineering is responsible for administration, engineering and operations related to the installation, manufacturing, maintenance and removal of signs, flexible bollards, moveable barriers, in-house traffic sign production and other traffic control devices. The office draws on the expertise and talents of engineers, sign designers, planners, inspectors, IT experts, analysts and others to help the agency achieve Vision Zero and other city goals.

Traffic Control & Engineering (TCE) is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Supervisor of Traffic Device Maintainers Level III to serve as the Director of Maspeth Interior Operations. As Director, the candidate will be responsible for managing supervisory, traffic device maintenance and production staff for the design, manufacture, and distribution of traffic control devices to be deployed citywide. This role will oversee a large and complex operation that includes the Maspeth Machine Shop, Art Room, Sign Stockroom, and Central Warehouse. The responsibilities include planning and scheduling work crews, parts and equipment needs, budget and labor estimates, and requisitioning supplies as needed. The Director will coordinate with Borough Engineers to ensure the timely distribution of traffic signs for Street Improvement Projects and other transportation initiatives, as well as coordinate activities with other units, allocate vehicles and equipment amongst the work crews, and review engineering drawings. The selected candidate will also coordinate the delivery and placement of temporary traffic control devices for special events and traffic projects. Administrative duties include maintaining absence control calendars, evaluating staff, making recommendations to improve methods and procedures, and attending meetings. The Director will be responsible for waste management, the handling and storage of hazardous materials, the physical condition of work locations and ensuring adherence to all agency safety rules and regulations in creating a safe work environment for themselves and colleagues ensuring that all safety equipment and gear are used and worn properly on the work site. The ideal candidate should have experience in managing, meeting milestones, and complying with all rules and regulations. Also, the ability to work collaboratively with others, possess a willingness and readiness to tackle challenges, oversee day-to-day operational and administrative aspects of the job, ensure work is performed in a safe and timely manner, provide leadership, and assist staff development in various technical and non-technical areas.

Minimum Qualifications

For Appointment to Assignment Level II and Assignment Level III
1. At least one year of experience as a Supervisor of Traffic Device Maintainers working for the NYC Department of Transportation; or

2. Four years of recent, satisfactory, full-time, practical experience maintaining, servicing and repairing mechanical equipment, including two years in a supervisory capacity.
