OFFICE OF CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Executive Director of Forensic Operations, the Director of Forensic Imaging will have oversight of both Radiography and Photography. Forensic imaging intersects with various disciplines, including pathology, investigations and records. The person who assumes this role will facilitate collaboration between these groups, promoting a more comprehensive and cohesive workflow. Additionally, OCME is acquiring 3 new PMCT scanners, in each of the borough offices, resulting in expansion of the current duties and workflows of the existing staff. The PMCT scanners are scheduled to go live in all 3 Forensic Pathology Centers (FPC) by the fall of 2024. In order for OCME X-Ray Technicians to develop skillsets to manage this new technology, the selected candidate will have to train staff to optimize the benefits of this new technology for the agency. Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Standardize protocols for both photography and radiography, ensuring consistency and reliability in evidence collection.
- Ensure that imaging techniques are appropriately applied, enhancing the accuracy of evidence that can be critical in legal proceedings.
- Lead the adoption of new techniques and equipment, ensuring our office remains at the forefront of forensic imaging practices, thereby improving overall investigative efficiency.
- Engage management team to train staff in the latest forensic imaging techniques and best practices. This investment in professional development will improve the skill set of our team, ensuring high-quality outcomes in all imaging efforts.
- Ensure that all imaging practices comply with legal standards and ethical guidelines, protecting the integrity of our office and the rights of the deceased and their families.
- Allow for better management of resources, including budgeting for equipment and technology upgrades, scheduling imaging sessions, and ensuring that workflows are optimized for efficiency.
- All other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

1.Master’s degree from an accredited college in emergency management, public health, disaster management, emergency preparedness/administration, public administration, or related field and one (1) year of satisfactory full-time professional experience in one or a combination of the following area(s): emergency preparedness planning/management, emergency medical services, fire or public safety, law enforcement, homeland security, public health, mental health, environmental/occupational health and safety or a related specialized area; or

2.A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in one of the areas described in “1” above; or

3.A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. However all candidates must have a minimum of one (1) year of satisfactory full-time professional experience in one of the areas described in “1” above.


Preferred Skills

PREFERRED SKILLS - Excellent organizational and communication skills. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications. - Experience in Forensic Imaging (Forensic Photography, Forensic Radiography, etc.)

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
