Job Description
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, bd accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Director of the Forensic Anthropology Unit manages and is responsible for the daily operation of the Forensic Anthropology Unit. Provides administrative, scientific, and technical operational management for the Forensic Anthropology Unit. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring ISO lab accreditation is successfully maintained. In addition, is responsible for maintaining accreditation standards and reporting to the NYS Commission on Forensic Science. As the Director of a NYS accredited crime lab, serves as a member of the New York State Crime Laboratory Advisory Committee. In addition to supervisory and managerial responsibilities, the incumbent independently conducts scientific analyses performed on specimens submitted to the Forensic Anthropology Unit and responds to certain types of death scenes. Typical tasks include but are not limited to the following:
- Case management and staff supervisory functions;
- Provide technical and/or scientific review of the quality assurance and employee technical training programs;
- Manages the departmental budget in addition to new and continuing grant initiatives;
- Perform daily casework involving analysis of skeletal, decomposed, mummified, burned and/or fragmented human remains. Analyze cases for the purpose of decedent identification and/or assessment of skeletal trauma;
- Supervise and participate in the peer-review process for casework;
- Respond on site to death scenes as required (e.g., burials, scattered remains, fire scenes, mass fatalities, etc.);
- Manage decedent identification efforts which utilize NamUs for case upload and decedent tracking; conduct detailed analysis of OCME cold cases to successfully resolve challenging identifications;
- Oversight of the ongoing identification efforts related to World Trade Center remains;
- Coordinates activities with local, state, and federal authorities;
- Stay current with advancements in forensic science and emerging technologies, integrating them into laboratory operations;
- Testify as an expert witness in forensic anthropology;
- Participate as a critical member of the agency’s disaster response team, working in the field and in the mortuary;
- Coordinate training for OCME and law enforcement personnel on laboratory and field techniques relating to Forensic Anthropology;
- Other duties as assigned.
CRIMINALIST ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - 2184C
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field.
- A doctorate or master's degree with three-five years of experience in a supervisory capacity, forensic science experience directly related to the responsibilities and activities of a forensic anthropology laboratory and documentable court testimony experience and experience in crime scene death investigation cases. Preference will be given to applicants with board certification and a track record of involvement in the forensic sciences through professional organizations, research, publications, and/or committee appointments. Experience with ISO 17020 lab accreditation protocols and procedures is essential. Preferred candidates should possess the following: expertise in human osteology, forensic anthropology, and archaeological recovery techniques disaster victim identification excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and computer skills the ability to exercise independent judgment and manage multiple priorities. Strong understanding of research methods and data analysis.
