The DOT Art Unit manages all temporary and permanent public art projects on behalf of the NYC Department of Transportation. The Unit works on a number of priority projects, some of which include: 1) Execution of the DOT Art Program, a temporary public art program to install commissioned and existing artworks on DOT properties in partnership with local community-based organizations and artists; 2) Management of permanent public art projects on DOT properties in conjunction with the Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program mandated by law. The Director of DOT Art will report to the Executive Director of Strategic Communications and will be responsible for the following tasks related to the DOT Art Program: 1) Administration of the DOT Art Program; 2) Coordinate with the Agency Chief Contracting Officer throughout the competitive procurement process for event production and sponsorship services and manage selected contractors and event partners; 3) Manage all procurement related to DOT Art program including utilization of engineering consultants; 4) Conduct units budget planning and reporting, and oversee the units processing of invoices throughout the fiscal year; 5) Oversee DOT’s collaboration with community-based organizations to manage temporary art projects throughout all project phases (selection, design, fabrication and installation); 6) Develop and circulate open calls to solicit proposals from community-based organizations, artists and performers; 7) Interface with Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art staff on DOT permanent art projects as the Percent for Art liaison; 8) Prepare and deliver presentations to internal operating units and external partners such as elected officials, community boards and other local community stakeholders; 9) Manage two full-time Project Managers and interns.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Educational training with preference given to study in one of the following areas: arts administration, art history, urban planning, public policy, event planning, marketing, visual arts, design or architecture Demonstrated experience collaborating with artists, arts organizations, community based organizations and/or business improvement districts A strong interest in and knowledge of public art and the art world Demonstrated experience with procurement, contracts, and budgeting strongly desired Strong presentation writing and oral communication skills strongly desired Ability to establish excellent working relationships to support the successful delivery of agency projects strongly desired.
