The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) seeks a full-time Administrative Fire Protection Inspector in the Bureau of Legal Affairs/Code Development Unit, reporting directly to the Fire Code Counsel. The successful candidate will: manage the implementation of the New York City Fire Code, Fire Department rules, and other fire safety laws and regulations, including developing inspection surveys and Standard Forms of Orders used by BFP units and the Bureau of Operations; work closely with the Bureau of Legal Affairs-Enforcement Unit on penalties and procedures for violators; supervise Fire Department representation before the Board of Standards and Appeals; provide technical assistance to senior department leadership, BFP executives and other BFP staff; and develop guidance for the BFP staff and the public; participate in the development of new Fire Codes and Fire Department rules; conduct and participate in policy-making discussions with City officials, including the Mayor's Office, NYC Department of Buildings and NYC Department of City Planning; assist in the development of Certificate of Fitness examination and study materials in coordination with the Public Certification Unit; represent the Fire Department as a voting member of the International Code Council and coordinate Fire Department participation in the International Code Council model code process; serve as BFP liaison with respect to designated NFPA and UL projects; and otherwise support the portfolio of the Code Development Unit.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Seven (7) years of full-time experience including two (2) years in a progressively responsible managerial or administrative capacity, in one or more of the following:

a. the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables;
b. the development of safety standards for the manufacture or storage of such materials;
c. the inspection of premises where such materials are manufactured, stored or housed to detect potential fire and explosion hazards;
d. the design, installation, operation, repair and testing of sprinkler systems, standpipes, or other fire detection or fire extinguishing systems; or

2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. Education from an accredited college or technical institution with specialization in fire science technology, chemistry, physics or engineering may be substituted for the general experience requirement on the basis of one year of education (30 credits) for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have the two years managerial or administrative experience described above.

License Requirement: On the date of appointment as an Administrative Fire Protection Inspector, possession of a Driver License valid in the State of New York is required. Class 7 is not acceptable.


Preferred Skills

1. Excellent knowledge of the New York City Fire Code and New York City Construction Codes, Fire Department and Department of Buildings procedures, bulletins and manuals, and familiarity with national codes and industry standards. 2. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. 3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and outstanding professional judgment. 4. Excellent research and writing skills. 5. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with members of a multidisciplinary team. 6. Proficiency in Excel and on-line conferencing applications (Microsoft Teams, etc.)
Residency Requirement

Pursuant to New York State Public Officers Law, you must be a resident of the City of New York at the time of appointment. However, if you have completed two years of employment with the City of New York, you may be a resident of Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk, Orange, Rockland or Putnam counties.
