Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The NYPD is hiring an experienced attorney to serve as a Director within the Domestic Violence Unit, within the Office of the Chief of Department. The NYPD DVU spearheads the Department’s development of domestic violence policy, operations, and program implementation, and ensures these officers have the tools to perform this critical mission. Overseeing a team of uniformed and civilian staff, and working in conjunction with a uniformed Commanding Officer, the Director will:

- Participate in thorough reviews and analysis of the Department’s response to domestic violence cases and provide feedback and strategy to support future responses

- Provide day to day legal advice, strategy and guidance on domestic violence issues to executive staff

- Identify process gaps and recommend strategies for improving investigative and prosecutorial collaboration.

- Facilitate collaboration across investigative units, specialized task forces, and administrative divisions within the police department to strengthen case outcomes and crime reduction goals

- Serve as a primary liaison between law enforcement agencies, prosecutors’ offices, and other criminal justice stakeholders to improve case investigation, coordination and strengthen prosecutions

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position requires an attorney with a license to practice law in the State of New York, and at least 7 years of recent full-time responsible, relevant legal experience, subsequent to admission to the Bar. Prior experience should include significant litigation experience in constitutional and criminal issues. The candidate should also have familiarity with Department policies and operations, through knowledge of legal strategies and methodologies and outstanding written and verbal skills.

In compliance with Federal Law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

Minimum Qualifications

Admission to the New York State Bar; and four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work.

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.


Preferred Skills

Applicants must be admitted and in good standing in New York State and must have substantial legal experience following graduation from an ABA accredited law school. Experience with domestic violence prosecution or similar caseload. Ability to think creatively, embrace new approaches and pioneer innovative solutions to intricate problems. Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to write reports, correspondence, literature reviews and memorandums.
