Job Description
The City of New York Department of Sanitation’s Bureau of Information Technology (BIT) is responsible for the data processing functions and operations of systems that provide operational, analytical, and managerial support functions, as well as IT resource management, for DSNY. Working closely with owner/client bureaus within the agency, BIT develops and implements both custom and packaged applications, and maintains the requisite technical infrastructure, using in-house project resources and hired consultants. We encourage innovation, creativity, and a think-outside-of-the-box attitude when solving complex problems and implementing new solutions.
BIT is seeking a Desktop Engineer, able to support and troubleshoot desktop support-related issues in a fast-paced, large public sector organization. In this role, the Desktop Engineer will work closely with the Desktop Operations Managers, and key IT management, to provide support for DSNY desktops and related equipment. This includes the responsibility of all procedures related to the identification, prioritization, and resolution of incidents, including the monitoring, tracking, and coordination of desktop-related tickets. The Desktop Engineer is also responsible for assisting the Desktop Managers in planning, designing, and analyzing the organization’s Desktop infrastructure while ensuring high levels of availability.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Thoroughly evaluate, validate, and create application packages, upgrades, and uninstalls using SCCM/MECM
- Test Application remediations in the development environment before sending them to production
- Work with appointed system & and application owners regarding application creation and testing
- Review and assess the risk associated with any new applications
- Feature and Security updates on Windows OS
- Design and maintain Windows OS images using MDT/SCCM/MECM
- Collaboration between server, network & and security teams to ensure efficient operation of the company’s desktop computing environment.
- Create, submit, and obtain approvals for application deployment change control procedure
- Documents tech specifications for all new and updated application packages
- Experience with creating and updating SQL queries
- Experience and knowledge in building scripts with PowerShell and PS APP Deploy Toolkit
- Microsoft App-V Application Sequencing
- Task Sequence copy, edit, and create for automated OSD
- Windows 10 PS scripting for OSD task sequence deployment, with MDT and ADK integration for Windows OS
- Configure and recommend settings for GPOs in Active Directory to manage Windows OS endpoints
- Create and prepare devices with Windows OS Kiosk configuration
- Create self-contained OSD images for off-the-network machines
- Configure, manage and update Azure WVD images and hosts
- Manage and update OS driver sets to comply with security standards
- Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot end-user workstations and related hardware and software in order to deliver required desktop service levels.
- Provide reporting to senior management for application and security updates
Experience:
- Software review and application packaging
- Application packaging software - PS APP Deploy Toolkit
- Using System Center Configuration Manager SCCM/MECM
- Provide custom and canned reports using SCCM/MECM
- Creating deployment packages and custom applications in the SCCM/MECM enterprise environment
- Validating and executing packages within the SCCM/MECM environment
- Provide weekly activity reports describing activities accomplished
- Effectively communicate with customers, stakeholders, and technical specialists
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of satisfactory full-time experience, in mainframe computer, mid-range computer, LAN or WAN computer environments and or local desktop support; or"
2. An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university and three years of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in "1" above; or
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory, full-time experience, as described in "1" above; or
4. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 semester credits, from an accredited college or university, for six months of experience. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of satisfactory full-time experience, as described in "1" above.
The successful candidate should possess the following: - NYS Driver’s License - Excellent technical knowledge of PC and desktop hardware, including Dell, HP, Apple, and others]. - Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience. - Ability to diagnose network printer issues. - Extensive equipment support experience with Microsoft OS and Microsoft suite of applications - Knowledge of SCCM/MECM, ability to create and maintain software packages. - Ability to manage, test, and deploy standard desktop and laptop images. - Ability to test, maintain, and support computer group policies. - Ability to operate tools, components, and peripheral accessories. - Able to read and understand technical manuals, procedural documentation, and OEM guides. - Ability to conduct research into PC issues and products as required. - Effective interpersonal skills and relationship-building skills. - Strong written and oral communication skills. - Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language. - Understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives. - Analytical and problem-solving abilities, with keen attention to detail. - Self-motivated and directed, with the ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. - Experience working in a team-oriented, public sector, collaborative environment. - Strong customer-service orientation. - Must have the ability to work well with others. - Ability to work off hours and on-call schedule.
