NYC DOT has an exciting opportunity for skilled engineers to contribute to a newly formed unit within the Division of Sidewalk Inspection and Management (SIM).
SIM is responsible for maintaining the city’s 12,760 miles of sidewalks and approximately 193,000 corners. Within SIM, the Pedestrian Ramp Program (PRP) was formed to undertake an ambitious citywide accessibility initiative focused on pedestrian ramps (curb ramps). PRP works closely with stakeholders and project sponsors to address issues of ADA compliance, including DOT units, outside agencies such as NYC DEP (Department of Environmental Protection), NYC DDC (Department of Design and Construction), NYC DOB (Department of Buildings), and external stakeholders including, MTA, NYSDOT, etc. The PRP Engineering Team is responsible for the design and management of pedestrian ramp projects, design review of other projects, the development of inspection criteria, construction QA/QC, and the tracking of pedestrian curb ramps and ADA compliancy issues within the city right-of-way.
Under the direction and supervision of a licensed professional engineer, the Design Engineer is responsible for developing grading and geometric designs of pedestrian ramps, reviewing projects for pedestrian ramp and ADA design issues, developing innovative solutions, CADD standards, workflows, and processes that advance the goal of accessible NYC streets.
The Design Engineer will also be responsible for the evaluation of existing pedestrian ramps, and the development of accessible design solutions for pedestrian ramps and facilities. They will conduct reviews, attend site visits as needed, develop innovative processes, and utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D to develop grading designs, evaluate technical infeasibilities, and prepare contract plans, working drawings, and specifications. The candidate will collaborate with units in DOT, other agencies, contractors, consultants, vendors, and the public. The Design Engineer will develop expertise to help ensure the agency achieves its goals of safety, access and mobility, livability, cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and resiliency; with emphasis on accessibility.
Preferred Skills
Experience related to transportation engineering, site grading, roadway design, and/or drainage design is preferred. Excellent communication and computer skills, experience with NYCDOT guidelines, and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities at once are desired. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge and interest in accessible design and ADA regulations.
